Metopes on the East Side - Olympia

Augean Stables
- 6th labour
- Had to cleanse the dirtiest stables, The Augean Stables
- He has matured by now as he has a beard
- Hair slightly shorter than in the previous ones
- First depiction of this labour in art
- On the east side of the Temple of Zeus in Olympia
- Very broken up and now only fragments remain
- Heracles was ordered to initiate the cleansing of the Augean Stables
- He achieved this by diverting the river water of the River Alpheus to run through the
stables and hence clean it
- Athena is almost archaic — full frontal with the head dramatically turned to the side
• The arm positions of Athena are very Kore-like, as well as her posture
• Although detailed, the drapery is rather boring and unnatural
• Neck twists quite far
- Early Classical design:
• Movement portrayed through Heracles straining to push crowbar
• Some elements of drapery
• Very accurate anatomical proportions
• Detail of face
• Not looking straight at the audience
• No unbelievable turning angle of body
• Emotion
- Since it was related to the area of Olympia this Metope was put in a special place, out
of chronological order
- Climactically at the far right
- Composition:
