Factors affecting travel to long-haul destinations

Examples are green.

Time zones and length of flight
This factor affects people when they fly to a long-haul destination as they pass through time
zones. Time zones are regions where the local time is set in relation to a world standard
time. The world standard time is called Greenwich meantime (GMT) which was created in
1884 and it is set in London.
Daylight-saving time (DST) is used in most places in the world. In the UK, it is known as
British Summer Time. Other regions might introduce DST on different dates.
International Date Line affects cruise passengers crossing the Pacific as travelling east across
the line takes the tourist back one day and travelling west takes the tourists forward one day.
Travellers can be affected by jet lag when crossing time zones and the International Date
Line.
An example would be New York, which is 5 hours ahead of London (GMT +5). Another
example would be Hawaii being 10 hours behind of London (GMT -10).
People on long-haul flights could become dehydrated, bored and uncomfortable due to
being cramped in tiny seats. They can also be irritated due to the lack of sleep. Having stop-
overs also put people off of travelling long-haul. People may choose not to travel to far
destinations such as Orlando as the flight time is 9 hours. Travellers might stop travelling
long-haul as they do not want to sit near a loud child and some people might also think that
long flights are more dangerous. Hawaii is affected by time zones as lots of people do not
want to travel 17 hours with stop-overs, so they might choose another destination for their
holidays.

Seasonality
Visitors need to be aware of the hemisphere in which their destination is located as long-
haul destinations have different times of the year when it is suggested to visit and not. Some
destinations have very high humidity and rainy seasons which makes bad conditions for
holidays.
For example, people from the UK should visit Australia in winter, as it is their summertime.
August is the best time to visit Hawaii, because it is the hottest month with 27 degrees. July
is also a good time as there are 11 hours of sunshine. November is the worst month as it is
the wettest and January is the coldest. It affects the destination as most people choose to
visit there only in July and August to avoid wet months.
