In this report, I will talk about the hard and soft transferable skills I mentioned in a previous piece of
work. I shall comment on the skills I talked about and evaluate whether I believe they are suited to
me and how I would develop them in the future.
The first transferable skill I will talk about is teamwork. Teamwork is a very important and widely
used transferable skill by many employers. It is clearly advertised as one of the most important and
in demand skill an employee could have. Businesses use teamwork in multiple ways, for example
they would regularly take part in team bonding activities where co-workers can get to know each
other and therefore can work together effectively in the workplace. Teamworking skills can be
developed by understanding your fellow co-workers and building a rapport with them before
attempting to work together on a piece of work, this would help when trying to take on an idea from
a co-worker and understanding their point of view when tackling an assignment or piece of work. I
personally believe that my team working skills are lacking and are not at their best, I could develop
the skill over time by participating more in group activities and taking lead when I have to.
There are advantages and disadvantages to the team working skill. An advantage to team working is
it allows for others to implement their ideas and it is easier to come up with breakthroughs through
this method. Another advantage is work can be completed quicker if there are multiple minds
working on it at the same time. However, a disadvantage to teamworking is that some individuals
feel they can produce better quality work when working independently, therefore working as part of
a team would hinder their progress.
Secondly, the attitude an individual has to work is another important skill that employers look for. An
employee's attitude is incredibly important to the smooth operation of a business, if an employee
has a very positive and motivated attitude to work then they are more likely to be invested in the
company itself and will take pride in the work they are doing, this will also increase the quality of the
work produced. A positive attitude to work can be developed through various means, one of these is
if the employer gives their employees a degree of responsibility which will make them feel valued to
the company. Also, having a positive attitude to working is a soft-transferable skill that an individual
can carry with them throughout their career as well as their personal life.
An advantage to having a developed and positive attitude to work is it allows employees to become
motivated about their work, therefore allowing them to work harder and produce better results. A
possible disadvantage is an employee may be too positive thinking which prevents them from seeing
major flaws in ideas or pieces of work.
Another soft-transferable skill which is looked well upon by employers is reliability. Reliability is a
very crucial skill which has the potential to cover many aspects of a business, for example, an
employee may be reliable in that they always turn up to work on time or they could be reliable
because they always meet deadlines. In either case, reliability has a key part to play. Reliability allows
an employee to not only look good to an employer, but it also allows them to take better care of their
personal lives and makes them better at handling responsibility. A way in which an employee can
develop their reliability is to firstly make a good impression on their employer, this will make them
more likely to receive unique opportunities in the future, as well as this they can meet deadlines on
time and produce high quality work. I personally believe i am reliable when it comes to meeting
deadlines although i could develop this skill by taking on more responsibility in certain roles.
An advantage to being a reliable worker or simply having the skill is you will be looked upon more
favourably by employers and you are likely to develop friendships in the workplace which have been
