D1/ D2 UNIT 10

Choices made and the most significant and insignificant
research
Questionnaire
We chose to make a questionnaire because it is easy to analyze. What went well is that we got a lot of
information that can help us with opening times as well as possible perks that would could offer. This is
helpful because now we know what techniques would attract the most customers as well as appropriate
open times. However the sample size was quite small as I only had 7 people to fill in the questionnaire.
One thing about the questionnaire is that I could have chosen better people to fill it in and give more
detailed answers in my qualitative questions. This is important because I feel like the answers were not
very helpful and some answers seem quite dishonest which makes the surveys irrelevant and a waste of
time. The questionnaire was also quite lengthy. Shortening it might promote more thoughtful and honest
answers and would make the survey more useful and help give valuable data. If I was to make this survey
again I would take out the age range because I don’t think it is necessary in the food and drink industry. I
think this because everyone would eat and drink regardless of their age.

One question I could have asked is how many people are willing to pay for Wi-Fi per hour, as this would
allow us to find a deal with a good broadband to cater for everyone because if we only offer free WI-FI
then we would have to opt for a cheaper broadband that might not be as good.

I think the most important piece of research from the questionnaire is finding out what times people are
likely to visit the internet café. This is helpful as it helps me decide appropriate opening times for the
internet café. Also by knowing what the most and least popular timings are to visit a café the business
can work out when they should have more stock ready as well as how much staff should be working on a
Monday afternoon in comparison to a Saturday morning.

The least important information is the question about the age range because everyone uses food and
drink services regardless of their age and I don’t think it helped with internet coffee shop research as
whole.

Observation
The observation was a good choice because it gives valuable information because it watching things
happen in real time. However it is possible that I may not see everything happening as I had a lot to
focus on in one go. It is also difficult to tell whether the specific day I chose was representative, as it
could have been more packed if there was a certain special offer, or it could have been quieter than
usual if their was an event close by that was more interesting. I think that one thing I could do better is
do the observation for an hour rather than 30 minutes as this will give me a better understanding of how
people use coffee shops. I think if I was to do this again I would have an extra observation session at a
different time of day to get an idea of how the day to day life is in a coffee shop. I think I did pick a good
coffee shop for my research as it is a well known house hold name so it is very popular.

One thing I could have observed but didn’t, is how many people used the free Wi-Fi for leisure versus for
studying and work.

I think the most important piece of research I found is from observing how many people stayed in the
café and used Wi-Fi services with their own device to do work or study on. This is important for an
