Unit 14: Physiological Disorders P1, P2, P3, M1.
Within life some individuals may find themselves having one or more physiological disorders,
I shall be basing this investigation on 2 physiological disorders that an individual may have.
My first disorder is called lumbarization. Lumbarisation is an abnormality that is present in
the individual from birth, this does not necessarily mean that it will be picked up then. The
location of this disorder is within the spine, here it appears as if there are six lumbar
vertebrae and only four vertebrae. This appears this way because the first sacral vertebra is
not fused to the rest of the sacrum properly or at all, this may form in various ways for
example only part of the vertebra is fused.
The main body system that may be affected by this abnormality is the nervous system, this is
because the problem persists within the spine, a major part of the nervous system and so
issues with the spine may cause nerve damage or cause them to be highly sensitive;
potentially causing various problems such as loss of feeling or pain and discomfort.
There is little to no understanding of the official cause of this congenital abnormality/birth
defect and some people may not experience any symptoms or problems caused by it, so
they go undiagnosed since there is no initial need to test for this issue.
Despite the little understanding of the cause of this disorder, there is the possibility that this
issue may be inherited and so an individual with this disorder may pass it on to their
offspring. This increases the child’s risk factor for getting this disorder. In addition, there are
no indications as to whether there are factors that increase a foetus’ chances of developing
this disorder.
Since not everybody receives symptoms from this, there are no records of the statistics
within the UK of the amount of people diagnosed with this disorder, this is an example of
where the clinical iceberg is relevant as not everybody will go to their GP and get diagnosed.
Some individuals may find great pain and discomfort due to this disorder and so other body
systems may be affected for example the musculoskeletal system, this may be caused due to
the individual becoming less mobile due to the pain in their back, weakening their muscles.
Since lumbarisation is sometimes linked to sacralisation, there becomes a knock-on effect
with symptoms of pain and discomfort throughout the body.
In addition;
“With sacralisation there may be fusion of the transverse process to the pelvic bone
(ilium) on one or both sides, or there may be a false joint (pseudarthrosis). This
makes for wonky spinal movement”
