1916-17 Battle of the Somme and Verdun
These are battles within World War One with very heavy casualties.

Turnip Winter
Causes - Germany was constantly under threat from starvation due to British
Naval Blockades
- Much of Germany’s produce either rotted or was not successfully grown
- Meant they had to eat turnips
Bolshevik Revolution (Russian)
The Russian Revolution overthrew the monarch Nicholas II, the last Russian Czar,
and a new communist government was set up.
Effects – This was one of the causes of the German Revolution as they felt that due
to the Bolshevik Revolution being successful, they could copy it.
1918 March Treaty of Brest-Litovsk
This was a peace treaty between the new Bolshevik Government and the Central
Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire), which
ended Russia’s participation in World War One. It also gave lots of important
industrial land to the Germans.
Nov End of World War One
Effects on - Failure of WW1 as they were still on French Territory but America had
Germany joined and Ludendorff Offensive failed.
- Death toll rising but little achieved which caused the morale to be low
- Hardship at home – food shortages and deadly influenza (Spanish flu)
- Russian Revolution gave hope to German communists
- German Army still on French Soil and there was no damage in Germany,
which created the ‘Stab in the Back’ (Dolchstoss)

Events - 29 Oct German sailors at Wilhelmshaven naval base refused to follow
orders to set sail.
