UNIT 12 ASSIGNMENT 2
Media & Technology in Sport

,Task 1
Media has an enormous influence on modern sport, especially on football. First of all,
television is very important as it has a big impact on football. One of the factors are TV
rights, this is where TV networks pay a high fee to the clubs and the leagues, so that they
allow them to play live games on their network for millions of people to watch. Last season,
each club in the Barclays Premier League earned an average of £80 million from the TV
rights alone. This makes the clubs wealthy for the beginning of the season. Another factor of
television having an impact on football are advertising sponsorships. Around all stadiums in
the top leagues there are multiple popular brands being displayed around the pitch. Once
again the club makes money from this as the sponsors pay the clubs to have their brand
advertised when the match is on TV; that people watching the game will see the brands
name to persuade them in using their services. However, that doesn’t just work on display
boards but, sponsors are also on teams kits. Important football matches get advertised on
TV, when theirs a break during a movie or series too, which lets people know about the
match beforehand. Final factor of television having an impact on football is the popularity
that the sport gets. TV lets millions of people to follow the sport, not just by displaying live
games, but also programmes that allow the audience get more depth to the sport and the
matches. For example, programmes like Monday Night Football and Match of the Day, let
viewers watch the highlights of the game that they might’ve missed due to work etc., and
even the pundits discuss the matches by talking about what occurred, how it occurred and
why it occurred.
Rule changes, in football, occurred due to the influence of media. One of the rule changes
that happened, very early when televisions were black and white, was changes to the kits. It
would be hard to recognise, for the audience, which team is which if they both played in the
same design of kit with a similar colour. Therefore, changes were put in place, that both
teams must have a different colour of kit when they play against each other, so that’s the
reason why teams have a ‘home kit’ and an ‘away kit’. Another rule that has been
introduced due to the influence of media was the pass back rule, that’s when a player passes
back to the goalkeeper, the keeper cannot catch the ball into his hands or use his hands in
any other way. The reason for this was probably to not waste time and make football a
boring sport to watch for the audience. As without the pass back rule it could’ve been used
when a team is winning and keeps passing it back to the keeper who then holds it with his
hands and repeats this type of play. Recently, a rule came in place that helps the referee in
making a correct decision, it’s called goal-line technology. There were too many occasions
were the ball crossed the goal-line and a team should’ve been awarded a goal, but
defenders cleared the ball before the referees noticed that the ball went in, as the referees
don’t usually have a good view of those types of situations, it’s hard for them to make those
important decisions without being 100% sure. Therefore, a computer system has came in
place, were sensors are placed inside and around the goal, and when the ball passes through
the goal line, a ‘BUZ’ is given to the referee’s system in his pocket and lets him know that a
goal has been scored. Additionally, for the audience watching the football match on TV, a

, replay comes on from the goal-line technology viewpoint to show if a goal was scored or
not, when it’s hard to tell. This adds accuracy to the game of football, and there’s less
criticism, on different types of media, about those situations involving the referee.
Timeouts in sports are important. This is because they let the players have a break and
discuss with the coach any tactical changes, they only last a short period of time, so that the
sport doesn’t get boring having many long breaks. Not just the players, but the audience
behind the TV get a quick break if they have to do anything quickly, in the meantime adverts
come up on the TV screens and promote a brand or/and a product. For example, a Super
Bowl 30 second advert during a timeout cost a company approximately $800,000. In my
selected sport there are no timeouts except from halftime, which is a maximum of 15
minute break, that occurs at the end of the 45th minute mark (1st half). This is the only break
that occurs in the 90 minutes of the game, except from potential injuries that might happen
and give players 2 minute breaks or so. If it’s possible due to the rules of the game and the
game does go to extra time, there will be a 5 minute break between the 2 halves of the extra
time.
The media influenced local and national press. Local press will most likely present news
based on the local club and will support it by agreeing with the club’s directors and its fans,
but will disagree with referee’s decisions if the local club lost. There will always be
favouritism in the local press, supporting the local club. On the other hand, national press
will focus on the popular professional teams and will present statistics to do with a football
match, will make transfer rumours on popular football stars and might even try to confront
football stars in their personal life. For example, the photo of Wayne Rooney caught drunk
whilst away with the England national squad. Stories like that have a big influence on clubs,
if the club should keep the player or let him go, but there also will be pressure on the player
himself as he will try to prove that it was an accident and he might do that by trying harder
in matches and show to the fans that he still is one of the best players.
Impact of the internet on football was huge, due to how many football fans use the internet
in various ways, positive and negative. There are many features on the internet that can be
used to talk about football. One of the features is social media, this includes applications
such as Twitter and Facebook. Football clubs advertise themselves on social media, this
helps the fans follow about what’s happening at the club, things like new transfers, ticket
prices, team sheets before a football match kicks off and all other news. Simply, fans get
information quickly through their favourite club’s social media accounts. Additionally,
footballers use social media too, which lets the fans see what professional footballers look in
their personal life and not just judge them on their performance when they play. They can
also communicate to the footballers, by writing below on their posts, this can motivate
players by the support that their fans give them. Another feature are fan sites. This is where
fans can discuss information, involving their club, with other fans. It helps many fans
understand different viewpoints based around the club and become friends with each other.
Final feature are online replays. This is where people can have a look at what occurred
during a match and watch it multiple times to make their own opinion about the situation, if
the player deserved a booking, or if it was an offside. There are plenty of things that could
