Unit 5 Assignment 1
, Task 1:
Sports coaches are vital to the success of a number of programmes across a range of sports,
they are at the heart of participation and performer development. The definition of a role is
‘The function assumed or part played by a person or thing in a particular situation’.
An innovator is someone who has the ability to think through problems by using their
knowledge and experience to come up with new ideas and approaches. He’s there to make
training sessions fun and effective, maintain participants interest and involvement. An
effective innovator sports coach must be brave enough to try new things in order to get
different results, for example when things aren’t going his way he would have to be brave to
make adjustments. Innovator also has access to the latest scientific and technical
knowledge, which is very important. Rafa Benitez, Newcastle United FC Manager, is a
brilliant example for an innovator sports coach, this is because he has a squad rotation policy
that works well against many good teams, and that means that he keeps participants
involvement as players keep getting rotated in and out of the squad, as well as that, he is
brave enough to try new things.
Friend coach is when both the coach and the performers share positive and negative
experiences, which means that they share similar thoughts at the same time. This usually
happens between youth coaches and youth performers, as at that time playing sport is just
for the enjoyment and fun, also, the youth participants look at coaches as they are their
friend. The role of this type of coach is to be there when things go wrong, for example by
giving sympathy towards the individuals. The management of coaching environment is very
important, as it has to be friendly and respectful, the coach shouldn’t treat their individuals
matches, in that sport, like a Wimbledon Final.
In almost all situations players will look at their coach as a source of inspiration and
knowledge, this means the coach will be their role model. Children often imitate role models
mannerisms; they will try to act like them and be them, if it’s doing your hair like your
favourite NBA player, or wearing the same type of football boots like your favourite football
player. Therefore, it’s vital that coaching is safe, responsible and that coach’s behaviour is
considered good practice. To add to that, the knowledge that the coach passes onto his
players is important, as it must be correct, well explained and well detailed so that the player
is 100% sure on why the coach gave him that information and how it helps. A great example
of a coach that passed on great knowledge to his players and became one of the biggest role
models in the football world, that most coaches look up to is Pep Guardiola. He was the
coach that changed the ‘tikki takka’ play that Johan Cruyff invented, in order to make
football a more enjoyable sport to watch than it was before.
