M2: Discuss strategies used to minimise effects of one type of challenging behaviour in health and
social care settings.

There are many different strategies used to minimise the effects of Dementia in a health and social
care setting that still give the elderly person with Dementia the opportunity to feel empowered and
treated in a fair manner.

• Reading the patients files before dealing with them

• Talk to the patient and try to find out why they behave in the way that they do

• Discuss care plans with family members

• Monitor how the patient is behaving

• Counselling- CBT

• Giving the individual with Dementia choices

• Medication

• Activities

• Person centred planning and care

Reading a patient’s files who has Dementia and is presenting challenging behaviour before they are
dealt with could minimise the effects of Dementia as if a care worker has researched about the
patient they will know what to expect from this patient and will know what manner to act in around
this individual in order to minimise the chances of them behaving in a challenging way. For example
if an old man only presented challenging behaviour towards female staff a worker who has read the
files would be able to find out this piece of information and instead of trying to deal with the patient
they could send a male care worker in to care for this individual in order to keep care provision
smooth and effective.

Talking to a patient and trying to find out why they behave in the way that they do could potentially
minimise effects of Dementia in a health and social care settings. Firstly it could minimise the
chances of an individual with Dementia from presenting challenging as if an elderly person is being
given the opportunity to have verbal contact with people this could be a reward for them especially if
they haven’t got any family and are missing them. This would make them feel valued and
empowered and want to behave in a good manner so that people will continue to want to
conversate with them. Secondly it could minimise the effects of Dementia as an individual with
Dementia might be asked why they behave in the ways that they do and this could help care
providers try to comply with the needs of this individual. For example if an elderly woman with
Dementia behaved in a challenging way because they didn’t enjoy the activities that she was being
asked to do the care providers could try and give her the opportunity to pick activities for herself.

Discussing care plans with the family members could also be a way to help minimise the effects of
Dementia on an individual who has it as this would give the families the opportunity to see what
their family member who has Dementia is expected to be behaving like in their care settings. For
example an elderly man with Dementia might present challenging behaviour at both home and at
care settings so to ensure that the care that they receive at home and the care their receive in the
social care settings don’t clash, a care plan can be published to the families so that they can learn to
care for the individual with Dementia the same way that they are cared for at home. This would
reduce any confusedness as the individual presenting challenging behaviour will have consistency in
