,Abstract
This paper looks at how the communication style and substance of the political
leadership in the UK altered both before and after the Brexit referendum in 2016.
Speeches and declarations by prominent politicians from major parties such as the
Conservatives, Labour, and the SNP are subjected to a comparative content
analysis. The data shows distinct differences in the rhetoric used during the
campaigns between pro- and anti-Brexit. Following the Brexit vote, political parties
adjusted their messaging and positions on policy. Under the leadership of Boris
Johnson, the Conservatives solidified their support for implementing Brexit, while
Labour attempted to put the topic to rest. Meanwhile, the SNP used Brexit as a
means of advancing their goals of independence. The results demonstrate intricate
post-referendum dynamics as the involved parties modified their communication
tactics in the face of a changed environment. Political polarization, voter
disengagement and the significance of leadership communication in framing
important social events are examined as implications. The shifting narrative reveals
complex mechanisms forming Brexit divides. It is necessary to conduct further
research on the effects and resonance of rhetorical strategies in UK politics.
