Social media (which means websites and applications that enable users to create
and share content or to participate in social networking) have a negative effect on
young people. I mostly agree with this opinion, however, I’m going to look at the
pros and cons of teenagers using social media.
A negative effect of social media is that it takes away time from seeing friends and
relatives, doing sports, learning and engaging in activities related to our hobbies.
Most teenagers keep themselves occupied in the hours after school until way past
bedtime.
A new study has found that teenagers who engage with social media during the
night could be damaging their sleep and increasing their risk of anxiety and
depression.
Research has shown that teenagers need 9.5 hours of sleep each night but on
average only get 7.5 hours. A lack of sleep can make teenagers tired, irritable,
depressed and more likely to catch colds, flu and gastroenteritis.
When friendship is conducted online, you aren’t hearing or seeing the effect that
your words are having on the other person. Because the conversation isn’t
happening in real time, each party can take more time to consider a response. No
wonder kids say calling someone on the phone is “too intense”—it requires more
direct communication.
If kids aren’t getting enough practice, many of them will grow up to be adults who
are anxious about humans’ primary means of communication—talking. And of
course, social negotiations only get riskier as people get older and begin navigating
romantic relationships and employment.
A former Facebook employee recently said social networks are "destroying how
society works.”
Social media can cause addiction, hypochondriasis and shallower relationships as
well.
