TYPES OF DRAMA:
COMEDY
● Aims to make audience laugh
● Its tone is light, mostly has a happy ending
- DRAMATIC IRONY

TRAGEDY
● Murders, death, insanity, and pain
● Main characters usually have some kind of weakness or defect that
causes their downfall
TRAGICOMEDY
● Combines the feature of tragedy and comedy

● Plautus, Roman dramatist - the first to write a tragicomedy
MELODRAMA
● Everything is hyperbolized

● Mostly love stories with beautiful heroines, charming heroes, and
scary villains
, LITERARY ELEMENTS OF A DRAMA:
➢ Plot - what happens in a play
- the order of events occurring in a play (Natural and Episodic)
➢ Conflict - tells the problem of the story (Internal and External)
➢ Setting - place, year, time, culture, mood, custom, weather/season,
historical era
➢ Theme - the philosophy that forms the base of the story or the moral
lesson that the characters learn
➢ Character - before the dialogue, the playwright will often include a
cast of characters (Major or Minor)
Things to be considered: Physical, Social, Psychological, Moral
➢ Dramatic POV - narrator tells the storyline
- objective point of view
➢ Dialogue - the life-blood of drama
● Monologue - featuring a speech made by a single character
- allow a character to address other characters in
the scene or the reader/audience
● Soliloquy - speech or monologue spoken by a single character
- express their inner thoughts and feelings that are
not intended to be heard by others
● Aside - allows character to make brief remarks to another
characters or audience
