D1 – Evaluate the effectiveness of the recommended controls in reducing the incidents of
harm or injury
The little fishes swimming classes are held in Bryntirion Comprehensive School, there are
many potential hazards to the service users and in order for those to be controlled there has
to be control measures put in place.
In order for an individual to get into the building they have to walk down the steps, the
hazard could be that they may fall which could result in an injury. Therefore, to prevent this
from happening the service user should install hand rails to ensure that the individuals have
something steady and secure to hold while walking, however this would be expensive and it
is likely that the setting cannot afford it. Therefore, to prevent someone from getting hurt
there could also be rules that every child who enters the setting has to be accompanied by
an adult, this would prevent the number of children who slip and hurt themselves as they
will be with a responsible adult. If further action was to take place, it would be a good idea
to install signs of there being steps as well as an extra hand rail to ensure everyone has
something to hold on to if it is needed. Again this would be costly. Another suggestion is that
there could be a short ramp in the same location so there would be access to a larger
majority of people, an example of this would be that a person who is in a wheelchair has
more independence as the setting would be more accessible. However, even though these
ideas would be beneficial to the setting itself they would be very costly and people may not
use them as often as what was first thought.
Within the setting the individual would have to enter through the main doors which are
extremely heavy, the hazard of this is that a child could get their fingers caught which could
result in an injury. To make sure that this doesn’t happen there should be control measures
that have been put into place, therefore it should be ensured that each child is with an adult
and that they are able to hold the doors themselves. It could be a possibility that the
entrance needs to be monitored when there are small children around, this could result in
there being an individual present to supervise the doors when people are using the setting.
Nevertheless, the individual who is supervising may not be needed in the setting as there
isn’t likely to be an accident if each child is with an adult. Another suggestion is that the
entrance doors could be kept open by tying the door to the post on the outside of the
building to ensure that the door cannot slam back on anyone, this would then prevent
