M2 – explain how life factors and events may interrelate to influence an individual’s
development.
Redundancy which could lead to poverty.
“Redundancy is when an employer reduces their workforce because a job or jobs are
no longer needed.”1 There are many reasons for a person being made redundant
examples would be that technology has made the job unnecessary so the job that
the individual was hired to do no longer exists, it could also be that the business has
been bought by another company and therefore it may be closing down or it could
be used for something else and the individual is not suitable to do what is required.
After losing a job, there is very likely to be a lot of money problems, therefore the
individual is likely to have to rely on benefits for a while, and this could mean that
they are struggling to pay for things which are a necessity. Therefore it would have a
huge impact on their physical health. They may not be able to pay their rent or
mortgage causing them to get in debt, this could result in them having to move out
and their only choice could be to move into a house with poor living conditions such
as dampness, this means you are far more likely to develop a respiratory problem
such as asthma or an infection. It is also very unlikely that they would be able to pay
their bills as they need to prioritise, so they could be living with little to no heating
causing them to be cold all of the time, they could develop an illness such as chronic
hypothermia this is where heat is lost slowly over time; this is commonly seen in
people who live in poorly heated accommodation. They will also have no hot water
so it would be very difficult to have a wash frequently, therefore their appearance
may change as hygiene isn’t the most important thing to them. They may even
struggle to pay for food, this could result in them buying cheaper processed foods
meaning that they aren’t getting the nutrition they need which could make their
immune system weaker, also depending on how much they eat they could end up
becoming obese, or if they decide to cut down on food to save money they could
lose a dangerous amount of weight which could also weaken their immune system,
this could lead to less sleep which is likely to make the individual feel very tired
throughout the day.
