P2: Explain the potential effects of five different life factors on
the development of the individual.
Individual: Kim Kardashian West
Born: 21st October 1980
The 5 different life factors that may have or could impact Kim’s physical, intellectual,
social and emotional development are genetics, environmental, biological,
socioeconomic and lifestyle.
Genetic factors
Genetic life factors are the physical and behavioural traits that Kim’s inherited from
her parents. If she had inherited sickle cell disease, then this would mean that her
red blood cells would get produced in unusual shapes and this could cause problems
because they don’t live as long as healthy blood cells and can become stuck in blood
vessels.
The first problem that this could cause for Kim physically is that some pain could
develop when sickle-shaped red blood cells block blood flow through tiny blood
vessels to the chest, abdomen and joints. The pain can vary in intensity and can last
for a few hours to a few weeks. If these pains are severe enough then it could lead to
Kim having to be hospitalized. Another physical problem that may be caused by
sickle cell disease for Kim is vision problems. The blood vessels that supply the eyes
can become plugged by sickle cells and damages the retina. So, Kim may
experience symptoms such as pain in the eyes, blurry vision and dark shadows and
flashes. This would mean that she would have to have regular optician’s
appointments.
Sickle cell disease could also cause intellectual problems. Kim could have
experienced missing out on school due to time spent in hospital or doctors and
opticians appointments. This might have made her fall behind on work and due to
this her grades could have gone down. With grades going down and missing out on
work she may have had to stay back a year or two to complete education and to get
qualifications.
Missing out on school could also have interfered with Kim’s social life while in
education. If she had to miss a lot of school due to hospital, doctors and opticians
appointments then she wouldn’t have spent as much time being able to create bonds
with people and forming a strong friendship group. If she wasn’t in much then it may
have caused her to move from group to group because she didn’t have the time to
create strong bonds with people. Having sickle cell disease could also have affected
her social life because if she had to spend a lot of time resting or friends and at
appointments then it would leave less time for her to go out to socialise with her
friends. So this would have affected her social life because her friends would have
