What are biocontainment levels?
Biocontainment levels or bio-safety levels are the different levels of protection that are needed depending on the t
some laboratories may need more protection from the pathogens they work with. There are 4 different levels that
what pathogens the lab would work with and the severity of them. As you go through the levels (from BSL-1-BSL-4
and aseptic techniques.
Bio-safety level 1:
This is the most lenient bio-safety level. This only applies to the labs that only use low-risk pathogens that are not l
specialist equipment like HEPA filters or laminar flow cabinet and do not need to be isolated. In these labs, you foll
coat, goggles and gloves), tying long hair back, no eating and drinking, etc. However, you must also wash your han
Bio-safety Level 2:
This is more serious than bio-safety level 1, however, it is more lenient that bio-safety level 3. Labs that are under t
than dilute samples of pathogens. In Bio-safety level 2, the bio-safety level 1 protocol apply as well as any procedu
performed in a laminar flow cabinet, the use of autoclaves to decontaminate used materials before disposal (this a
station, biohazard warning signs and self-closing and lockable doors.
Bio-safety Level 3:
Bio-safety level 3 is the second most severe bio-safety level. This applies to labs which work with exotic pathogens
of bio-safety level 1&2 as well as possibly needing to use respirators, coverall suits or scrub suits, a hands-free sink
from outside into the lab. They also need to be locked away from general access corridors, and they must have loc
Bio-safety Level 4:
This is the most severe bio-safety level. This applies to labs which work with highly life-threatening pathogens that
the previously mentioned procedures for the other bio-safety levels. They wear the same PPE as everyone else, ho
before entering the facility and shower on their way out, they must also decontaminate any materials before they
