Math Comprehension PRACTICE Test ANSWER KEY
The math on this screening test is essentially math from MAT 095, which you either passed or
“tested out of”, and/or MAT096, which is a prerequisite for this course—SCD107.

You WILL HAVE TO SHOW ALL WORK FOR FULL CREDIT—you can use your
calculator,butyouhave toshow how youwould set upthe equationtofigure itout.

This is about comprehending HOW to figure out the answer and “translating” a word problem into
a math formula, not just getting the right answer.

There are a couple of different ways to calculate percentages. You can always start with the basic
formula: is = % I’ll show you in each problem below.
of 100

1. One day there were 310 visitors at the local zoo. 60% of them were not season pass holders.
How many visitors had season passes? 124

If 60% were not season pass holders, then 40% were season pass holders. So, the question is…
what is 40% of 310? Using the formula is = % plug what you are given into the
formula of 100
“what is” means that the “is” in the formula is what you’re solving for, so “x” goes there. 310
is the “of ”; 40% is the “%”, and 100 is always the “100”

X = 40 Cross multiply, so you get 100x = 12,400, then divide both sides by 100
310 100 100 100
X = 124
Shortcut— 310 x .40 = 124 (.40 is the same as 40%)

You can show either method as your work on the test. Aslong asIsee your thinking
process.

2. I’m expecting 500 people for the dinner meal. I expect that 15% of them will order the
lasagna, 25% of them will order the stuffed chicken, 35% of them will order the filet
mignon and the remainder will order the salmon.
a. How many portions of lasagna should I have ready?
75
So, what is 15% of500? X = 15 100x = 7,500 x = 75
500 100 100 100

Shortcut— 500 x .15 = 75 (.15 is the same as 15%)
