Manchester is home to many retailer and retail parks, this is partly due to Manchester being one of
the most well-known social hubs in the UK. Because of this, there are many reasons why a retailer or
a superstore may want to be located in and around the Manchester area, most of these are also
located strategically so they are available to as many people as possible.
One well known retail hub in Manchester is Stockport Merseyway. Merseyway Shopping Centre is a
large shopping centre in Stockport, England. Adjoining onto Mersey Square, it forms the basis of the
town's main shopping area. It was opened in 1965 and was
extensively refurbished in the 1990s, it consists mainly of a
large pedestrianised area built on stlts over the River Mersey.
There are two levels of walkways giving access to the retail
units. It is home to a large selecton of well-known retailers,
these include but are not limited to: Debenhams, Marks &
Spenders and JD. The centre and Stockport's shopping area
attract about 14 million visitors per year, making it a prominent
shopping destnaton in the Greater Manchester area. It covers
much of the afuent areas of South Manchester, competng
with other major retail destnatons in the area such
as Manchester City Centre and the Trafford Centre.
The main purpose of the centre is to attract as many
customers as possible and make a proft.

The Trafford Centre is a large indoor shopping centre and leisure complex in Manchester, it is
located near Trafford ark and is approximately fve miles from the Manchester City Centre. The
Trafford Centre opened in 1998 and is the second largest shopping centre in the United Kingdom by
retail size. It was developed by the eel Group and is owned by Intu ropertes. 10% of the UK
populaton live within a 45-minute drive of the shopping centre
which attracts more than 35 million visitors annually, it has
Europe's largest food court in The Orient and the UK's busiest
cinema, attractng more than 28,500 visitors each week. There
are over 11,500 car parking spaces making it accessible even in
the busiest of seasons. One of the biggest attractons about The
Trafford Centre is that it is located just off the M60, making it
an easy journey for most consumers.
The Trafford Centre is strategically placed to be as accessible to
as many people as possible, this is evident as it is only a 45
minute drive for 10% of the populaton. The Trafford Centre is
located in the area it is because it aims to cover a large
demographic, also making it viable for family days out.
The main purpose of The Trafford Centre is to provide products and services to their customers
through a large selecton of retailers. It also aims to make itself as accessible as possible to the
public, hence why it has a large parking area and is currently building a tram stop in close vicinity.
