Introduction: This assignment will examine the ethical issues involved when providing care
and support to meet individual needs

P3: Explain how to incorporate ethical principles into the provision of support for
individuals with different needs.

When providing care to an individual it is important that it is done ethically, this means that
the service provider should know the difference of any right and wrong action/behaviour and
should also know how to deal with it, by balancing their views and beliefs in order to provide
the individual with best care and support, but when acting ethically they should also take
into account the morals when facing situations, as they should take action that is beneficial
to the service users so that no harm is done to them and to ensure that they are given the
required treatment and care.

It is important that the organisation and the service providers try to minimise any risks when
promoting an individual’s choice, this is because when working with vulnerable individuals
there can be some possibilities of conflict between the individual and the service due to
some disagreements between them, this can be seen in case study 1, were we see that
Valerie, aged 24 is obese however she cannot see why she needs to lose weight or change
her lifestyle even though the service is trying to promote her to change. In this situation the
service providers and the organisation should not force Valerie to change as she has her
own right and is fully capable of make her own decisions instead the organisation should try
to compromise with her by giving more information about her health and should also try to
build up her self-esteem as this can encourage her to change, they should also give her a
variety of things that she can choose from so that she can pick the one she is more
comfortable with, for example it would be best to give her choices where she can pick
different diets, and because we know that she is vegetarian the organisation can promote
her to eat things that she likes as it would still be beneficial for her health, so it is important
that the organisation balances out all the risks when providing Valeria with support. The
service providers should also act ethically toward Valerie, to do this they should first respect
Valeria for who she is and not bring her self-esteem down, they should also respect her
differences for example her being a vegetarian and being obese, they can act ethically
towards her by treating her the same as everyone else and giving her the right things she
needs like only giving her vegetarian food by doing this they are respecting her views and
beliefs which would make Valerie more confident and comfortable around and in the
organisation.

In case study 2, the organisation should be able to manage any conflict within the service,
this because being able to act quickly the organisation can try to prevent the conflict and
learn from any mistakes that way involved so that they will have a better understanding in
how to deal with hard situations. We see this in case study 2, where Tremayne, aged 54 has
autism and is quite disruptive and is subject to outburst of temper, which cause other users
of the service to become distressed, so it is important that the service knowns how to
manage conflict as it can help the Tremayne and other service users to say calm and

, protected from any type of conflict that occurs. The service providers can manage this
situation if they approach Tremayne in a calm and comfortable way so that he can slowly
improve on his temper, the service providers also need to be patient toward Tremayne, this
is because from the case study we learn that he has autism, so it is important that the
service providers are patient as they are dealing with vulnerable individuals who needs
special care and support like Tremayne. To manage the conflict the service providers should
first try to calm Tremayne down by speaking calmly and show him that they have their full
attention to him, they should also try and get him away from the other service users so that
the service providers can take care of him privately to ease his temper. Tremayne also has
the right to be treated ethically, this means that the service providers and the organisation
should respect his differences and not leave out any details involved with his condition, for
example if he loses his temper the service providers should treat in an appropriate manner
and not treat him less than others due to his condition. Furthermore, we learn that Tremayne
has a wheat allergy, so the service providers should also act ethically towards this by giving
him food that are wheat free and also take into account the fact that he likes to eat pizza, so
they should buy him gluten free pizza and other things he likes and enjoys so that the
service can give him the required care and support.

Service providers also have to be aware of sharing information and managing confidentiality,
this means that the service provider have the duty to keep all information about the individual
private and safe, so that it cannot be accessed by anyone else, the service provider should
also not share any information without the content of the individual who is in care. We can
link this to case study 4, about Billy, aged 18 as the should not share any information about
Billy to anyone including their colleagues and anyone outside the workplace, this is because
it can not only keep the information safe but can also keep Billy safe from any other
individuals as well. We learn that Billy left home following an argument with his mother’s
partner, which resulted in a violent fight between Billy and the man, he has been then living
on the streets since that incident. It is important the service providers keep Billy’s information
private because he would be uncomfortable and upset if it were to be said to someone else
as most people like Billy wouldn’t like any information about the to be told without their
consent to anyone. The service providers should also act ethically towards Billy and not treat
him any less than the others due to his age, social status and his health, this is because the
service providers have the responsibility to make the service users better and to give them
the best care and support they require. For Billy’s case the service provider should not
discriminate against his age as he is young so he would need to be comforted and needs
support for him to manage the things that will come later in his life. So, acting ethically
towards Billy can help him build up his confidence and can help him to improve on his health
conditions he is currently facing.

Overall by being able to manage ethical issues the service providers will be able to give the
service users the best care and support the need and ensure that their users are satisfied
with the service and if they feel comfortable towards them, because if a service can
managing conflict, conflict of interest, balancing services and resources, minimizing risk
when promoting individual choice and are able to manage confidentiality, they will be able to
meet the service users needs
