Unit 5 D2 Applied Science

D2 – Analyse whether the media makes a positie contributon to the public’s
percepton of scienceo
When thinking about media in a positie aa and ho it contributes to the public’s
percepton of science is positiee becausee the aa ho the media presents science makes
people a are of the things it is capable of doing and hat it is not. Of coursee people are
going to haie diferent perspecties but the factual informaton is most ofen presented.
There are tmes hen the informaton in terms of presentng science in the ne spaper
artcles is not al aas positie.

For examplee in the recent ne se I haie found an artcle (2016) hich stated that the EBOLA
iirus has adapted in order to more efcientla infect human cells. This in ma opinion raises
an anxieta about the fact that humans haie increased chances of being infected ith the
EBOLA iirus. This means that the media doesn’t make a positie contributon in the public’s
percepton of science because it makes people orried that the science is not going to be
able to treat the EBOLA and people are more likela to die from it.

The media contributes to the public percepton of science in a negatie aa because people
tend to be more orried than before and it also highlights the limitatons of science hich
means that it is unable to treat diferent issues. This also means that people might think that
the scientst are hiding something from the people e.g. hen thea saa that thea are in the
process of deieloping the curee thea might mean that there is no cure at all and maabe that
disease is untreatable.

Another artcle from the recent ne s is that the scientsts haie completed an experiment in
order to determine the diiersita of the ecologa in our homes. For examplee in the USAe the
scientsts haie iniestgated hat are the most suitable conditons for arthropods are and
here thea liie. The scientst has performed the experiment in order to fnd out if ho the
amount of the arthropods liiing in the homes of the people in USA could afect their health.
The scientsts haie found the DNA of arthropods in the dust samples taken from the homes
of the USA populaton.

The things hich increased the diiersita of the arthropods in the homes of the people liiing
in the USA ere hether thea had cats and dogs or if the house o ner had a house ith a
basement. The point of the experiment as to fnd out hat causes people to haie allergies
in the homes of the people. The insects haie said to transfer a lot of diseases hich means
that if there are insects in aour house thea are most likela to transfer iiruses or diferent
infectons.

The media has infuenced the public’s percepton of science in a positie aa because it
giies some sort of ideas on ho the people liiing in the homes of the USA could preient
themselies from getng sick regularla or sufer ith the allergies. The skills of the science
could help ith the preienton of the diferent infectons and iiruses. In this casee the
