UNIT 4: Laboratory And Their
Applications!

,INTRODUCTION:
I’ll be working as a part of a team of skilled government health and safety
inspectors. My team leader has allocated me and my other team members to go and
visit a range of different science organisations such as The Estée Lauder Companies
and the laboratories in the NHS Foundation Trust, to obtain a report, providing the
important information on the departments of the organisation and give an overview of
their health and safety legislations and how the hazards of the health and safety is
managed in the organisations.
Identifying a specific science based organisations:
The Estée Lauder Companies
I have decided to inspect the legislation of a very popular cosmetics organisation,
which is called The Estée Lauder Companies. The Estée Lauder Companies is one
of the world's leading cosmetics manufacturers and marketers of quality skin care,
makeup, fragrance and hair care products, for example MAC cosmetics.
Main activities in The Estée Lauder Companies:
The Estée Lauder Companies focus on making makeup, hair care, fragrance and
skin care products. They do this by deciding which product they should make and
they start to add their own ingredients specific to the product, for example in lipstick.
The Estée Lauder Companies initially use wax and oil and melt it together. Then they
use colour pigment and solvent solution, which are then gonna be mixed together.
After blending for hours and setting, the formula is put into lipstick tubes and cooled,
so it can keep its shape. Everyday, The Estée Lauder Company looks for different
types of chemicals, pigments and fragrances and finds better ways to improve them
for their customers. They have been doing that for about 77 years since they've
made an appearance. The Estée Lauder Companies have improved their cosmetics
for All Ages, All Races and All Genders; including any type of skin condition and skin
types.

Legislations, Acts, Laws:
● Cosmetics are subject to legal definition; products used solely as
medicines are excluded. Regulation (EC). This is how cosmetic products
make it an offence to supply a cosmetic product that may cause damage to
human health or contains specific restricted or prohibited substances.
● The Act 1986 ( ASPA ) is to make new provisions for the protection of
animals used for experimental or other scientific purposes or testing.
● Safe Cosmetics Act 2003 is for removal of ingredients in cosmetics that are
carcinogens or cause birth defects which then gives the Food and Drug.
, ● Administration (FDA) authority to recall dangerous cosmetic products, and
requires disclosure of all ingredients on a label so that customers know what
they are purchasing.
● Control of Major Accident Hazards(COMAH) Regulations: ,This is when the
authorities must be notified if dangerous chemicals are being transported.
● Management of Health and Safety at work act 1947(HSWA) - This act gives a
duty to employers, to make sure that the workplace where their employees
work is safe and there aren't any risks that can be determined to their
employees.a
Legislations relevant The Estée Lauder Companies:
● Cosmetics are subject to legal definition; products used solely as
medicines are excluded. Regulation (EC). This is relevant to The Estée
Lauder Companies because the products makes it an offence to supply a
cosmetic product that may cause damage to human health or contains
specific restricted or prohibited substances.
● Safe Cosmetics Act 2003. This is relevant to The Estée Lauder Companies
because this is for removal of ingredients in cosmetics that are carcinogens or
cause birth defects which then gives the Food and Drugs.
● The Act 1986 ( ASPA ). Thai is relevant to The Estée Lauder Companies as
the organisation does not allow experimental testing on any type of animal or
other scientific testing.

Different scientific working environments:
PACKAGING:
The Estée Lauder Companies are incorporating more sustainable concepts into
their designs in an effort to reduce the potential environmental impacts of their
packaging across its lifecycle. They are striving to reduce and remove virgin plastic
packaging when deemed unnecessary through a variety of methods. They are doing
this by removing unnecessary packaging components and reducing the weight and
size of the packaging.
HAZARDS:It seems to be a very safe environment but many accidents can occur.
The Estée Lauder Company products are quite light however a whole box full of
products can become extremely heavy, hence when picking up the boxes, they must
be lifted slowly and with care as the packaging might be fragile, and as the boxes are
heavy with the products when carrying the boxes they can lead to injury.
, TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY: Materials like cosmetics and medications
frequently have precise temperature and humidity needs that, if the temperature is
not the correct one then it can swiftly generate negative impacts during shipping and
storage. These hazards can be at a High humidity which weakens the packaging ,
high temperatures can weaken plastic, and low temperatures can tend to make it
brittle.
EXPOSURE CONDITIONS: When you are talking about cosmetics, the time( when
it expires) and temperature of the cosmetic should be considered. When you are
buying and using any kind of product( cosmetic, skin care, etc )beyond its expiration
date there will always be risks. For example there could be irritation, rashes,
blemishes and various skin or eye infections( all of these example can be anywhere
on the body, depending on where you used the product)

NHS FOUNDATION TRUST LABORATORIES:
The NHS Foundation Trust is to devolve decision making from central government to
local organisations and communities. They provide and develop healthcare
according to core NHS principles. The NHS Foundation Trust Laboratory works to
diagnose disease, evaluate the effectiveness of treatment and to research the
causes and cures of disease. Most tests are carried out by laboratory scientists that
are done on blood, urine or other fluid or tissue samples, these are some routine
tests that are performed in very large numbers and others which are rare and
complex.
HAZARDS:
Fire and Explosions:In the laboratory, there are a lot of chemicals and liquids which
means that they should be treated as if they are as potent as gasoline. There can
also be Vapours that can travel at a long distance and may ignite if they reach a
flame or spark. There should be a fire extinguisher at every lab incase there is a fire
and it spreads.
Thermal and Chemical Burns:Many chemicals may be flammable or corrosive to
the skin and eyes. It is important to know what the chemicals are before you use
them and then use them with caution to prevent any type of spills and splashes. The
correct uniform should always be worn, such as lab coats that offer both FR
properties and chemical-splash protection.
