P1 Explain the functin if research fir health and sicial care

Research into health and social care has many functonss Research identies needs of speciic
populatons and groups which can allow for reviewing monitoring and improving policy and
practses It can provide nnowledge and understanding which provides the populaton with needed
informaton which can be used to identfy gaps in provision and the plan future provisions

According to Neil Moonie (2006) the needs of speciic populatons and groups refer to speciic
characteristcs that a locaton populaton obtains in relaton to healths This informaton is obtained
by the government through a census which allows service planners to mane decisions about service
developments and provide speciic care for speciic areas as there are diferent needs in diferent
populatonss As suggested by Angela Fisher et al (2007) the census will allow central and local
governments’ health informaton to target their spending in the most needed sectors to mane it as
efectve as possibles 瓠peciic populaton needs will also be met as the census will also loon at
housing transport and educatons 瓠ince the census is a legal obligaton it manes sure that all areas of
the country will have a review of their health care services and mane sure enough adequate housing
is provided which otherwise will cause housing developments The local government from looning at
the census will be able to allocate more money into certain resources and facilites for that local area
such as retraining if there is high unemployments

For example Cheltenham has a charity based in Hester’s Way to help provide healthcare services to
local residents and helps to identfy their needss In order to do so the charity helps to provide
communicaton between the patent and service which can include the provision of transport to the
service in uses In order to identfy any needs a local building is occupied by the charity for local
people to come and inform of any needs which have then been identied in frequent
neighbourhood coordinaton meetngss They also run a Young People’s group which also allows and
encourages young people to taln to the charity and their needs not being met Cheltenham Borough
Council (2015)s

Another example would include identfying needs on a county level such as Gloucestershires The
Gloucestershire clinical Commissioning Group partners with the health community and uses the
Gloucestershire County Council in order to identfy these needs; They do this by collatng
informatons This allows the county council to evaluate the services provided and to see if more
provision needs to be provided in order to meet the needs of the local peoples They use the joint
瓠trategic Needs Assessment (J瓠NA) report in order to identty these needs and also use the Director
of Public Health Annual Report which provides a county overview of health gloucestershireccg
(2016)s

The Big Lotery Fund provides funding in order to identfy needs on a natonal scales They help to
ind what the problem or issue is and provide evidence to support thiss They loon at the reasons for
the need which helps to create a soluton and see if the response is appropriate to meet the issue
raiseds They provided money in order to help identfy and solve the problem and allow people to
apply for funding throughout the countrys They ofer grants from £300 to more than £500 000 to
communites and voluntary groups and charites that help identfy needs and provide suitable
provision bigloteryfund (2016)s
