History Revision: SpainIsabella and Ferdinand: government:
Isabella and Ferdinand were from the Trastamara family.
1469: there was no whole Spain, there were 3 main kingdoms – Castle, Aragon, Granada
Castle was beter of than Aragon – inancially.
Ferdinand wanted to become successful by marriage, he knew how to negotate: grew up
during a civil war and watched his family rule.
Diferences between Castle and Aragon:
Castile Aragon
Powerful & good at war Kingdom of Aragon
Isabella and Ferdinand spent most of their tme in Kingdom of Catalonia
Castle Kingdom of Valencia
Involved in the Reconquista Each demanded their fueros
- Also involved in Aragonese foreign policy Each kingdom had its own Cortes.
Had a Cortes, but no Justciar When the Cortes met a Justciar was always
Cortes was weak in comparison to the Cortes in present – made sure the fueros were observed and
Aragon not eradicated
Had powerful nobles and grandees: they were Santa Hermandades unsuccessfully established in
more powerful than Isabella: she needed them on Aragon
her side Was in economic decline: none of the riches from
Towns wanted to build up wealth, but didn’t want the New World came into the port of Barcelona
to pay the nobles: they looked to the monarch for
support

Riches of the New World came into Seville, which
became the 4th largest city in Europe
Even when Ferdinand and Isabella married, Castle and Aragon were not politialll united. Thel were
more united than in the past due to the ionquest of Granada, whiih resulted in the Spanish Arml
and the spread of Inquisiton aiross both kingdoms.
The personal union of Ferdinand and Isabella strengthened them individualll.
Why was the nobility so powerful?
Some of the grandees were more powerful than the monarchs
They could summon more ightng men
They fought their way up during the Reconquista and were rewarded
The nobility had close links with the Church and they were linked to Military Orders
- If you were a Master of a Military Order you had the same status as a grandee
Towns were scared the nobles would become oppressive and they looked up to the
monarchs for protecton
Mesta: powerful group who governed the wool trade.
