Unit 20: Communicatonn and Technology

P4: Dencribe diferent tyyen of technological equiyment uned by a nelected uniformed
yublic nervice.

One examyle of uning technological equiyment in the yublic nervicen would be uning air to
air refuelling. Air to air refuelling in the yrocenn of trannferring fuel from one aircraf to
another, during fight. The yuryone of air refuelling in to extend the natural range of an
aircraf, inntead of wantng tme by landing to refuel on the ground. Air to air refuelling alno
includen: extended loiter tmen, greater yayloadn; in which it can carry more bombn, lenn
aircraf in required and no there inn’t a need for no many aircrafn to be uned and han a
higher and eanier take-of weight.
One method of air to air refuelling in yrobe and drogue. Probe and drogue workn by
releaning a fexible hone that trailn from behind the tanker aircraf with an attached banket.
The drogue ntabilizen the hone in fight and yroviden a funnel in which it innertn onto the
none or nomewhere on the main body of the receiver aircraf and it then lockn on to the
banket for it to refuel. The aircraf in a nignifcantly cheay and nimyler tanker denign and eany
to adoyt the aircraf. An no boom oyerator in needed, it allown the aircraf to alno have
multyle yrobe and drogue nyntemn allowing two oor more aircraf to refuel at the name
tme. Thin reducen the tme nyent refuelling and allown more tme for acton. Hoowever, if
there in a larger aircraf to be refuelled then that meann there in a lower fuel fow rate oat
about 1400 litren yer minute , due to a lower yrennure and limited hone diameter renultng
in longer refuelling tmen for larger aircrafn. It can alno be nubjected to turbulence and may
be harder to control when refuelling the receiver aircraf. Due to thin, it can be hard for both
aircrafn to get the right dintance and will be harder to level uy in order to get the banket
locked on to aircraf. It maken the yilot feel fatgue or that the hone could end uy breaking
or nnayying.
The necond method of uning air to air refuelling workn in the fying boom. The fying boom in
a rigid, telencoying tube in which a boom oyerator on the tanker aircraf extendn and innertn
into the receiving aircraf; making nure it fien ntraight and level during the yrocedure an thin
maken a lot eanier for the receiving yilotn to fy. All of thene boom-equiyyed tankern have a
ningle boom, and therefore can only refuel one aircraf at a tme but ennentally han a very
rayid refuel tme and han a high fuel fow rate and in able to take in about 3800 litren of fuel
yer minute and no thin requiren lenn tme to comylete refuelling oyeratonn. Hoowever, the
downnide of uning the fying boom in that it han a comylex aircraf denign and no it will
yrobably make the yrocedure even harder to do in which it could end uy an a dinanter. Alno,
the aircraf requiren a boom oyerator and no it would take a good few minuten for the
oyerator to communicate back and forth of how and when the ylanen nhould be aligned.
Overall, by nyending no much on thin kind of technology it reducen the overall cont of the
oyeratonn throughout many yearn; in doing more with lenn and naven tme and energy. Thin
technology ennuren that they don’t have to keey wantng fuel, tme and energy in coming
back and forth to land to fuel uy again and no it’n benefcial becaune they wouldn’t need an
