P4 - Explain strategies used in health & social care environments to overcome
barriers to efeccve communicacon & interpersonal interaccons
Language needs/preferences
There are ways in which we can overcome communicaton not being received. For example, when dealing with
people having language preferences, we can try to understand each patent's needs when it comes to
communicaton, so that the right method can be used. If the patent's preferred method is unrnown, their needs
would not be met as staf wouldn't be able to communicate with them. In order to ensure that the patent's
preferred method of communicaton is used, a member of staf could simply asr the patent for their preferred
method. Also, a professional medical assessment can be taren, to fgure out the patent's preferred method of
communicaton. For example, when dealing with a patent who prefers to communicate through sign language, a
member of staf who rnows how to use sign language would worr with the patent to ensure that their needs are
met and they receive the best service possible.

Sensory impairment and disability
There are ways in which we can overcome sensory impairment and disability. For example, when dealing with
people who have a sensory impairment or disability, we can ofer them technological aids. There are diferent types
of technological aids which include hearing aids, text phones, relay systems and minicoms, loop systems and voice-
actvated sotware. eearing aids are given to people with a hearing impairment. They are small devices powered by
batteries, which have microphones that increase the volume of any sounds that the person hears. eowever, the
hearing aid increases the volume of all sounds not just the one the person wants to hear, therefore, it may not be
good for loud places. Furthermore, text phones, relay systems and minicoms are given to people who are unable to
communicate verbally or are unable to hear. They are devices which have a small screen and a reyboard, which
allow the person to communicate through text. Another technological aid is loop systems, these are given to people
who are deaf or cannot hear well, and who use hearing aids. Loop systems are devices which mare the sound
coming from hearing aids even clearer. Lastly, there is voice-actvated sotware which is given to people who
struggle to communicate using writng, oten people with dyslexia. This sotware allows people to use their voice to
mare their computer do a tasr, such as typing a message.

Personality disorders, self-esteem, anxiety and depression
There are ways in which we can overcome distorted understanding. For example, when dealing with people who
have emotonal or psychological issues, staf can be trained to be able to communicate with them appropriately.
Communicatng efectvely with people with personality disorders, self-esteem problems, anxiety or depression can
be difficult and cannot be developed through obtaining informaton, only through experience and discussions with
colleagues. Staf can go through formal training which provides opportunites to gain experience and talrs about
theories on how to overcome communicaton barriers. When spearing to a person with emotonal or psychological
issues, staf should never be aggressive or should never blame the patent for their problems. Instead, they should
spear calmly and be understanding of what the patent is going through. Talring to a mentally ill patent in the wrong
way can mare them feel even worse, this can be especially dangerous if the patent has suicidal thoughts. For
example, if a member of staf is spearing to a patent with depression and is critciiing them or raising their voice,
the patent may lose hope that they could ever get better. This could lead to suicide as depressed people oten have
suicidal thoughts.

Efects of alcohol/drugs
There are ways in which we can overcome the efects of alcohol and drugs. A person that is under the infuence of
alcohol or drugs cannot communicate efectvely, as the drugs afect their central nervous system which is
responsible for communicaton. Therefore, in order to communicate with that person, we should allow them to
become sober frst. The person should be taren to a safe environment such as a hospital, where they have no access
to the drug. Once the person is no longer under the infuence of the drug, they will be able to communicate with no
