M2/D1 - Review and evaluate strategies used in health and social care
environments to overcome barriers to efeccve communicacon and interrersonal
interaccon
In this assignment, I will be reviewing and evaluatng strategies used in health and social care environments to
overcome barriers to efectve communicaton and interpersonal interacton. I will be discussing language
needs/preferences, sensory impairment and disability, personality disorders, self-esteem, anxiety and depression,
efects of alcohol/drugs, and environmental factors. nhe irst paragraph for each heading is 2 and the second
paragraph is D1.

Language needs/rreferences
Language needs and preferences can be overcome by asking patents for their preferred method of communicaton
and carrying out a medical assessment. nhere are both strengths and weaknesses of asking patents for their
preferred method of communicaton. strength is that this method gives the patent an opportunity to express their
needs. However, a weakness is that the patent may not understand what is being said to them, or they may not be
understood by the health or social care professional. For example, if a patent speaks another language they would
not be able to communicate their preferred method of communicaton to the professional. nhis could be overcome
by carrying out a professional medical assessment. nhere are also strengths and weaknesses of carrying out a
professional medical assessment. strength is that some patents may ind it easier to communicate through writng
than to communicate verbally, such as deaf patents. However, a weakness is that patents who are uneducated may
not be able to read and write, and therefore wouldn't be able to ill out the medical assessment. Overall, these two
methods of overcoming the barrier of language needs and preferences are not very efectve in health and social
care.

I have come to the conclusion that asking patents for their preferred method of communicaton and carrying out
professional medical assessments, are not very efectve methods for overcoming the barrier of language needs and
preferences. nhis is because they do not work for everyone. For example, a patent that does not speak English will
not be able to use either of these methods as they would be unable to tell the health or social care worker what
their preferred method of communicaton is or to be able to read the professional medical assessment.
Furthermore, the weaknesses of these methods cannot be overcome easily. weakness of asking for the patent's
preferred method of communicaton is that a patent who speaks another language would not be able to understand
what the health or social care worker is saying to them, this cannot be overcome easily as there would be no way of
the patent and health care worker communicatng. lso, a weakness of carrying out a medical assessment is that
uneducated patents would not be able read or write which would mean they cannot ill out the medical assessment,
which cannot be overcome unless the patent learns how to read and write which is too tme consuming. nherefore,
asking patents for their preferred method of communicaton and professional medical assessments are not very
efectve.

Sensory imrairment and disability
Sensory impairment and disability can be overcome by using technological aids. nhere are both strengths and
weaknesses of using technological aids such as hearing aids or voice-actvated sofware. strength of using hearing
aids is that it will help a patent with poor hearing overcome their hearing impairment. nhis means that they will be
able to understand what others are saying to them beter which would improve their communicaton. However, a
weakness is that hearing aids increase the sound of everything not just what the person is trying to hear, so it may
not be suitable for loud environments. nhis is because the sounds would not be clear and the person would be
unable to hear what others are saying to them which would mean that communicaton would be inefectve.
