Evaluate the view that the modern Conservative Party has abandoned Thatcherism - ✔✔✔Intro-
Conservatives have significantly moved away from Thatcherism in regards to Social and Law policies.
However they are yet to differ from Thatcher's views on foreign policy and largely on Economics.

Main Body 1- Social/Law and Order

Y Cameron dubbed himself a 'liberal conservative

Y He legalised gay marriage in 2013

Y Hug a hoodie campaign favoured a more understanding approach to young offenders +promoted a
'rehabilitation revolution' rewarding charities that helped with a payment by results scheme

N Cameron had supported tough sentencing on the london riots 2011

N The proposal of the Police,Crime,Court and Sentencing bill 2021 by Johnson's Gov

-EVAL Only tough on certain crimes/areas, mostly those that criticise and harm the gov, not Thatcherite
just self interested

Main Body 2- Economic

Y Public spending reached an all time high in 2021 during the pandemic for furlough schemes, tourism
sectors and the arts.

Y May promised 'austerity to end' and public spending to surge, she did so in her last week in office

N Cameron introduced austerity after the 2008 crash and slashed public spending on most sectors by up
to 25%

N Under Cameron's coalition gov universal credit and welfare schemes were pulled back to encourage
more self reliance, distinguish between 'strivers and shirkers'

EVAL Economic Policy in general still bares resemblance to Thatcher and the pandemic is an anomalie in
which the gov had no choice.

Main Body 3- Foreign Policy

Y Major, Cameron and May were both remainers/pro-european

N Brexit, thatch wanted to protect national sovereignty against the growing european community, that
was one of the main brexit arguments

, N Support of drone strikes in Iraq and Syria, Thatcher wanted to assert britains power abroad

Evaluate the view that the Conservative Party has abandoned its One Nation principles. - ✔✔✔Intro-

Main Body 1 - Social

N 2010 equality act aimed to protect those most disadvantaged and marginalised in society and
encourage positive action to reduce disparity similar to one nation beliefs about closing the gap, like
reform act 1867 (encouraged voting equality)

Y Police,Crime,Court and Sentencing bill 2021 by Johnson's Gov goes against the one-nation idea of
individual liberty, Grenfell tower incident and it's handling deepened class divide and showed a lack of
benevolence and care. Windrush scandal?

Main Body 2 - Economic/Welfare

Y Cameron and Thatcher encouraged a less paternalistic approach to welfare, more self reliance e.g rent
to buy scheme, osborne and cameron 'strivers vs shirkers'

N Johnson's gov took on a very paternalistic approach during the pandemic, helping those who lost jobs
e.g furlough scheme, small buisiness help.

EVAL free school meals during the pandemic showed Johnson's underlying Thatcherite views when it
comes to the poor? also pandemic is out of character for johnson

Main Body 3 - Thatcherism

Y Thatcher showed a stark change to one-nation conservatism, called them 'Wets'. Followed an
ideology/school of thought 'new right' but one-nations believed in no ideology so they could adapt to
changing times/social reforms. She slashed public spending, in favour of a more laissez-faire approach in
contrast to keynsienism of One-Nation.

N Followed similar One-Nation ideologies when it comes to the conservation of traditional values and
institutes- section 28 no promotion of homosexuality, public promotion of nuclear families.

Evaluate the view that the Labour Party has moved decisively away from New Labour - ✔✔✔P1
ECONOMIC

Agree- nationalisation/public ownership, new labour against it, revoking of clause 4, pro private-public
fund share e.g PFI contracts to build new schools, introduction of tuition fees (£1000), refused to
renationalise railways vs Jeremy corbyn wanted a national education service and the scrapping of tuition
fees, kier backs abolition of tuition fees, JC renationalised railways
