• Broad statement – I have done a lot of work experience to understand what the role of a
doctor involves________
• However, my most notable work experience was _____________
I observed the key skills displayed by doctors and how these contribute towards
delivering patient centred care.
• For example, I recognised the importance of communication skills when:
Situation – doctors thought that a patient may have meningitis
Challenge – to confirm their diagnosis they wanted to do a lumbar puncture
Action – they explained the procedure and the benefits and risks to the patient to take
informed consent from the patient
Response – Clear communication reduced the anxiety of the patient and they accepted
to go ahead despite a fear of needles
Effect – I realised the large impact communication has on providing patient care but also
to allow them to feel at ease during such a distressing time.
• I learnt about primary care as well and the importance of GPs especially due to the UK’s
ageing population etc… also GP shortage.

and witnessed the active contribution of allied health care professionals to provide high

• I spoke to a few doctors and was made aware of the challenges that doctors face.
Regardless of the setting doctors were exhausted and faced stressful situations. Speaking
to doctors was inspiring and motivated me further. I realised the importance of avoiding
burnout and ensure I take frequent breaks and pursue hobbies while working towards
my A levels.
