LECTURE 1: INTRO AND HISTORICAL CONTEXT

- Scale of mental health problems (MHP):
o WHO survey – 25,000 people, 14 countries
▪ 25% had MHP
• 10% depression
• 8% anxiety disorder
• 3% harmful use of alcohol.
o UK:
▪ 55% of adults at some point in their lives will become clinically depressed.
▪ 1% lifetime risk of schizophrenia.
▪ 20% of all adults at any one time have some MHP
▪ 3-6% of all adults = important anxiety symptoms
▪ 2-3% population have major drug dependence
▪ 1% of adolescent women have significant anorexia
