Introduction
The focus of this assignment is on assessing crucial aspects of strategic management.
These include differentiating leadership from management, assessing the level of
strategic leadership at Netcare, explain how Netcare can create a responsible
organisational structure, incorporating three phases in the process of creating a
responsible organisational structure and lastly establishing a strategic fit of strategic

QUESTION 1 Differentiating leadership and management
Management and leadership share many similar characteristics and outcomes.
According to Venter and Botha (2022) management and leadership are
complementary qualities that are inevitably linked to each other. However, according
to Venter and Botha (2022), the two terms differ in many ways. Leadership, on the one
hand, is strategic, focused on the vision of the organisation and involves a strong
element of building trust and emotional engagement with followers. Management, on
the other hand, is operational, focused on goal achievement, and more directive of
those who are managed.
The manager, on the one hand, is a person appointed in a formal position in a formal
organisational structure or hierarchy. Furthermore, a manager commands
subordinates because the position gives him or her the right to command. As such,
subordinate obeys the manager because he or she is contractually obliged to obey.
Leadership, on the other hand, relates to the relationship between a leader and a
follower. A leader may command because the follower allows him or her to command.
A leader influences, inspires, motivates, and has various responsibilities.
According to Venter and Botha (2022) organisations need both managers and leaders
to be successful. Managers are needed to deal with the complexity in their
organisations, by performing the essential managerial functions of planning,
organising and controlling, while leaders are needed to deal with and cope with
change. According to Venter and Botha (2022) one of the key aspects of leadership is
