Introduction
Equality
Equality is Ensuring that each person has an equal chance to maximise their potential is
what equality is all about. It is also the idea that no one should have worse life opportunities
due to their birth circumstances, place of origin, religious beliefs, or physical or mental
limitations. It is important for there to be equality. It is important for service users to
experience equality to create a comfortable space for the service users. Essentially it is to
ensure that people are treated as equal, and that the service users get the respect and
dignity that they are owed and deserve. Good equality and diversity practices in health and
social care ensure that the services that are provided to service users are accessible and fair
to everybody involved, this can include service users and care providers. This can ensure
that everybody who is involved feels that they are treated equally and receive the respect
and dignity they deserve.
Diversity
Essentially diversity is the practice of involving people from a range of separate social and
ethnic backgrounds and/or gender and sexual orientations. It is important to follow different
ethnic requirements when dealing with clients from different backgrounds. For example,
someone who is jewish can only consume kosher food. In the health and social setting good
diversity ensures that everyone knows that their differences are something to be celebrated
regardless of your background, ethnicity or belief. Diversity also enhances creativity and
encourages the search for new innovative perspectives and information.
Use of Equality and Diversity with Patrick
It is important for healthcare professionals to promote equality and diversity for example a
doctor will need to promote equality and diversity when dealing with different patients this
can include not discriminating against a certain person's belief or ethical views and giving
the same standard of treatment to everyone. Equality is important for Patrick as it means
that he is not discriminated against because of his gender when visiting the doctors or a
consultant. Diversity is important for Patrick because it means that he will not be
discriminated against because of his homesexuality by a doctor or those he may have to
see. Also it is important so he is not being mistreated because he has HIV. the reason it is
important for patric to be treated fairly is because it can have a negative impact on patrick's
mental health if he is discriminated against this is because if he is treated differently due to
his sexuality or the fact he has HIV it can create a sense of being alone for patrick which
,could lead to him developing depression from the sense of being alone and if worsened it
can ultimately result in patrick killing himself.
Use of Equality and Diversity with Brenda
It is important for a community psychiatric nurse to promote equality and diversity in the
workplace and when dealing with service users this is because a psychiatric nurse “work
outside hospitals and visit clients in their own homes, out-patient departments or GP
surgeries”(rcpsych.uk april 2018) and may have to deal with sensitive topics. It is important
to make sure that they keep the same standards of work for each patient whether their
gender may be different or even when they visit their homes they may see something they
disagree with but they should not make the service user feel ashamed or any different. it is
important for these same standards to be shown when a professional is dealing with brenda
this is important because the community psychiatric nurse will be visiting Brenda in her own
home so it is important for the nurse to ensure that she treats Brenda equally to others and
ensure that the nurse does not mistreat Brenda or take advantage of her as she can be
vulnerable in her home. It is important for these standards being promoted for brenda as if
they are not it can result in her mental health worsening due to her feeling she is alone and
has lost her dignity or that she is not respected it is also important for her to be treated
equally because she has already expressed concerns with too many health professional
being involved so for her trust to be misplaced it may result in brenda not trusting any health
professional which could result in her not remembering to take her medication or other
damaging effects she may receive
Use of Equality and Diversity with Maria
It is important for social workers to show diversity and equality because as a social worker
they have to deal with many different cases with a wide amount of people this can mean that
they made see two completely different people in one day which means that a social worker
must remain professional and give out the same equal treatment to those service users. It is
important for Maria's individual needs to be met due to her grandmother only speaking
Italian; it can result in confusion and discrimination for the social worker that Maria and her
grandmother may use. This is important because if equality and diversity are not being
promoted in maria case it can result in maria grandmother being mistreated which will result
in more stress for maria as she will be worrying more about how her grandmother is being
treated rather than her work which can result in her being fired from her job.
Discrimination:
Discrimination is essentially treating someone or a group of people unfairly due to their race,
gender, sexual orientation, culture, beliefs, ability, health, family structure, or any other
characteristic, especially in comparison to how you treat other people. This can then be split
into 4 types of discrimination: unfair,direct,indirect and positive. Unfair discrimination is
essentially when a service user is treated unfairly compared to someone else. For example
this could include someone not getting the same style of treatment as others. Direct
discrimination is when someone is rude, hostile or offensive to someone because they see
them as different. For example if a nurse was to be rude to a family because they are
immigrants Indirect discrimination is when a care provider has a policy which applies to
, everyone but it has a worse effect on some people than other because of who they are
Positive discrimination is when a certain decision is made in a person favour because they
are different to others for example when a person may give up there seat on a bus for a
pregnant lady
Importance of preventing discrimination:
It is important to prevent discrimination because it can affect how a person feels and what
type of care they receive for example if someone is treated unfairly due to how they look in a
hospital setting it could result in a lack of care which can result in the person receiving worse
treatment which could put there life in jeopardy or if in a care home setting it can result in
someone in that care home feeling neglected or discriminated against.
The Equality Act 2010 can legally protect service users or workers from discrimination in the
society or the workplace. The act replaced anti discriminatory laws with a single act which
allows it to be easier to understand. The equality act protects those from being discriminated
against due to age,gender,race,beliefs,pregnancy and disability. The equality act also
protects you from direct discrimination and indirect discrimination (Billingham 2016).
There are four types of initiatives which are aimed at preventing discrimination in care.
Access,diet,support and the use of advocacy services. Access is essentially adapting the
environment by having wheelchair accessibility and disabled toilets. Diet is essential where
those who have medical conditions, religious requirements or cultural requirements have a
choice. Support is essentially the fact that there are the appropriate resources and info
provided in a wide range of languages to reflect cultures that may be local, also to ensure
there are translators, interpreters and carers that are available to help those who may not be
able to speak the same language as the staff. The use of an advocacy services is essentially
that a service user or worker has access to an advocate that is able to speak on their behalf.
Preventing Discrimination for Patrick
M1: One type of discrimination patrick may face is that is direct discrimination this is because
he may be discriminated against due to him having HIV although there is is not any current
discrimination patrick shares a fear that if he does test positive to HIV he would not be
accepted into his martial arts club this could scare patrick alot and cause cause him to
develop bad thoughts about himself and his self appearance. Initiatives that could be taken
to make sure Patrick is taken care of is simply spreading awareness that HIV is only
transmitted through sexual intercourse so none of the martial arts attendees would not
contract it from Patrick so he can continue to go to martial arts.
D1: One way that the health professional has ensured that Patrick is not discriminated
against is by keeping confidentiality; this means that no one apart from those on the case
cannot learn about any details of patricks case. Other ways that the HP can stop
discrimination against Patrick is by spreading awareness about HIV and making sure people
are aware that it cannot be spreaded through normal contact. There can be many impacts if
discriminatory is not prevented. One of these is that it can have a negative effect on patrick's
mental health and self esteem.. Overall the positive outcomes for Patrick can be that he
worries less about the effects HIV could have on his life, for example that his landlord would
not kick him out if he finds out.
