Pharmacology Lecture W1 L3
Topic - Module Introduction (Practical Lab)

Introduction
What does this module teach?
1) Experimental Design
2) Practical Skills

Structure:
1) Introductory Lecture
2) Working in teams
3) Self-Written Research Lab Notes

Background reading is important, come prepared and understand the importance of
teamwork and collaboration. Everyone needs to be confident, be professional in and out of
the lab.

In the first semester you had certain liberties, you will no longer receive long detailed
methods, you must create your own methods.
● Design your own methods as a team! It is needed for your final exams.
● Tables are no longer prepared for you
● Gather as much data as you can, evaluate your collection methods as you progress.
● Share reflections as a team, record everything in the blue lab books. The lab book is
very important

The Lab Book Includes:
1) Step by Step Method
2) Calculations
3) Rationale
4) Alternatives
5) Raw and Analysed Data
6) Discussion and Evaluation
The lecturer should be able to pick up your blue book and be able to recreate the
experiment, organised however does not mean flawless. Do not tear out any pictures but do
not waste time on looks. The lab book should be repeatable and offer an opportunity for
those who miss a session to be able to pick up the book and continue where you left off.

Semester 2:
1) Inheritance in Drosophila Melanogaster

Group A will attend labs in weeks 1 & 3
Your Lab Dates:
Tuesday 30th January
Tuesday 13th February

, Abstract:
On yeast experiment, 200 words and there is a detailed support guide on Canvas, closer to
the time this will be made available. The exam is Multiple Choice, from both semesters and
can cover anything. There will be a revision/guidance available on Canvas.

Safety:
● Always wear PPE
● Be like Sampson the Dog

Experiment 2: Ecotoxicology: The Response of
Microorganisms to Environmental Toxins
By Nigel Jones

Looking at the response of the microorganism in relation to an environmental toxin. Nigel
mentions that safety, especially eye safety, is important.

Aim: To determine the effects of mutations on resistance to Hydrogen Peroxide in the
budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Experimental Design and Analysis Principles covered:
● Designing a simple dose response experiment
● Regression Analysis

It is strongly advised to read your lab books before entering tomorrow. Do the background
reading before entering the lab, there is also a paper exercise however this isn’t needed so
much as you have covered the paper topic earlier within the year.

You’re designing the experiment, you decide the amount of dosage, how much. You will
receive helpful hints. The actual yeast experiment will not be started until the afternoon after
the lunch break. The design experiment is in the morning after you finish doing the first
experiment, it is advised to think about this beforehand.

Ecotoxicology:
The effects of mutations on resistance to H 0 in the budding yeast Saccharomyces

cerevisiae

In this practical, you will examine and compare the survival of the two yeast strains following
treatment with hydrogen peroxide.
● Hydrogen Peroxide is a chemical that produces free radicalism.
● Cells are under constant track from a variety of agents capable of damaging DNA or
damage can arise spontaneously

○ Spontaneous reactive oxygen specific
○ Products of Metabolism
○ Ultraviolet Radiation
