Why do you want to study at Liverpool:
Course:
Integrated systems course- involves a mixture of lectures, small team
based learning, practical's as well as very early clinical exposure compared
to other universities. Whilst learning about each system, we are learning an
array of things, such as the microbiology, physiology, immunology, anatomy
etc- holistic medicine- looking at cases and patients as a whole rather than
just a singular illness or aspect of medicine. This is great, as it’s not just one
way of learning, which makes it way more engaging, and when I’ve spoken
to current Liverpool Uni Medical students, a lot of them state this reason as
being why they love studying at Liverpool
Early clinical exposure in reality from year 2, however, simulated practice in
year 1- this is fantastic, as it allows for us to have good exposure to clinical
practice early, and we are able to simulate patient interaction with the
communication for clinical practice sessions. This allows for us to firstly
build confidence in speaking and interacting with patients before we
actually do so. As a HCA, I have extensive experience with patients,
working in the clinic running diabetes and hypertension clinics, as well as
doing phlebotomy. As Liverpool place a lot of emphasise on clinical practice
and clinical skills, I feel that I am well suited to this, and already feel
comfortable speaking to patients on a regular basis.

, Also the secondary care placements that Liverpool University have on
offer are amazing, to give an example, I have an idea of what I would
like to specialise in, and that would be cardiology, as my passion for
heart health has been sparked during my work experience as a HCA,
doing NHS health checks, where we check for things like blood
pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar, and we explain how these things
can affect heart health. Also doing ECG’s and analyzing the
echocardiograms is something I found extremely fascinating. I noticed
that Liverpool Uni Medical School offer placements at Broad green
Hospital, which is part of the 3 hospitals that make up the Royal
Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospital Trust, and in Broad Green
Hospital, they have the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, which
specialise in cardiology and have been rated as giving outstanding
service by the Care Quality Commission. Also ranked as the 11th best
cardiology department in the NHS. This is great, as if I am able to get a
placement here, I would be able to further explore my interests with
cardiology.
Also places like Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, which is a great hospital
that specialises in paediatric care. When my cousin was really ill, due to
underlying conditions, as we are from the North West, she was sent to
Alder Hey, and the way they treated her and looked after her was
amazing, and I would be honoured to have a placement there, where I
can help and assist to treat patients the same way my cousin was
treated.
Also places like Aintree Hospital, which students have said are very
receptive to teaching, as well as places like the Liverpool Women’s
hospital trust and the Walton Hospital, which is the only place in the UK
that specialises in neurological services
The offer of prossection and the Human Anatomy Resource Centre- I like
how Liverpool Uni offer prossection because it saves time from having to
dissect a cadaver or specimen, and allows more time for learning and
studying the cadaver. Also, the HARC centre is great, as it specialises in
anatomy and the HARC are involved in a lot of research, being able to do
this due to the facilities available at the centre.
