Is it ever ethical for doctors to
strike?
Intro- what is striking?- act of raising concerns through protesting and
withdrawing work for a short period of time in order to highlight the issue.
Striking in the UK is generally organised by the British Medical Association,
which aims to support healthcare professionals in issues regarding pay and
legal problems they may face. Example of recent striking would be that of this
year in July, where junior doctors striked for full pay restoration.
For- human right to strike. It is a fundamental right of humans to strike against
unfair pay, treatment etc. As we know, junior doctors striked in July of 2023 in
order to achieve full pay restoration, in order to align with inflation rates as well
as current cost of living crisis. Compassion, doctors are also human with their
own problems, and bearing in mind the long and hard training they have to do,
some could think that they aren’t being compensated correctly. Ethical
consideration of justice
For- striking could highlight issues within the NHS that would benefit patient
care- if doctors are striking over pay for example, then this could urge the
government to put more funding into NHS. Talk about effects from Covid-19,
more people resigning and increasing staff pressures, more money pumped
into NHS would allow for greater funding and therefore greater incentive for
healthcare professionals to stay. Share anecdote about how when your
working, fall into technology problems, that could be solved with extra funding
Cons- patients could lose out on care if doctors are striking, ethical
consideration of beneficence to patients as well as justice. Talk about how on
work experience, you noticed the effects of the Junior doctor strike- caused
extra burden on other staff members, justice, have to think about patients as
well as other members of the MDT
Cons- public may lose trust in healthcare service- common belief that all
doctors are rich, due to the nature of the profession. Therefore, when the
public see doctors striking, could lose trust from patients. This could be
detrimental as losing trust in the healthcare service can cause a decrease in
health across the nation.
