Task 4: Review factors that have contributed to one declining and one developing destination, analyse reasons for
the development and decline of selected destinations and justify how current factors could impact on the European
travel market in the near future.
P4: Resort in declining:
Exploration: Faliraki is a beach resort located in a resort village near the Greek Island of Rhodes. At the years
of 2005-2013 the resort was considered as one of the most popular resorts in the whole Greece as, it was appealing
to different types of tourists because of its wide range of activities, history/culture/natural beauty visitor attractions and
entrainment places available. The local food and traditional cuisine restaurants were the resorts particularity.
Faliranki’s area advantage is that it is a beach resort therefore it was trying to ‘drag’ more people and encourage
more tourists to visit the resort and spend time near the seaside and spend money on local products and services
while increasing the profits and GDP of the country. The seaside resort was appealing to a wide variety of different
tourists as they had a variety of different attractions such as for example special interest tourist they have/had
museums, art galleries with the Greek history and wonderful architecture and places of natural beauty (beaches,
landmarks), for young adults they had many entrainment places such as night clubs, restaurants, casinos surfing and
for families they had a variety of theme parks, zoos and children activities near the beach.
Involvement/Development: So, after Faliraki started to be such an appealing a popular destination among
tourists, many tour operators took the advantage if it and found many potential areas where tourist wanted to fly to, so
therefore many tourism companies started to invest money into Faliraki to grow that place even more. The destination
is/was well supplied with many restaurants specialising in traditional Greeks cuisine, Mexican, Italian and British
cuisine in cheap and affordable prices so that made a lot of tourist wanting to visit the destination and accessibility
and a variety of different places to go to. After that Faliraki started to also provide everything that a holiday maker
might need such as shopping centres that offer; bags, rugs, jewellery and ceramics so it can keep tourists busy and
willing to spend money. There are also some ‘calm’ and yet undeveloped seaside resorts near Faliraki and Lindos
area such as the Traganu beach which is very calm and an ‘unspoiled’ beach for tourists that want to relax and have
a peaceful holiday. For young adults and tourist travelling for entertainment and fun Faliraki had introduced a lot of
nightlife entertainment such as nightclubs, beach parties, beach activities; parasailing, jet skiing, scuba diving or
snorkelling. This was the time when Faliraki resort was in development. Then after some time the resort had also
started to attract more family tourists so in result the resort had built one of the Europe’s biggest water parks; offering
slides, children water attractions and toddler pool, food and beverage near, swimming pools and hydro massage
section to attract parents and children.
Success: So, after Faliraki had been recognised by different companies in the tourism industry, then big
companies started to invest money into the destination. For example, Thomas Cook or Jet2holidays had given a big
contribution development to the region because they started selling many flights and holiday packages to Faliraki, so
all the money that the tourist were spending on their holidays where going to Greece’s GDP and profit. So, while
Failiraki had been experiencing a big flow of tourists visiting the destination the local council had decided that the
should improve the facilities in the resort and they have created many; restaurants, cafeterias, shops, souvenirs
shops. They had put up some umbrellas, showers, changing rooms, water sports and canteens near the beach too.
