Unit 1 The Business Environment – M3 Alisha-Jayne Cooper
Within this report I’m going to be looking at how the politiall legal and soiial faitors have impaited
upon two iontrastng businesses. I will be statng how the businesses have adapted to these faitors
and what they have done to respond to the external faitors that have been identied. I will be
looking direitly at the publii and the private seitor to help gain knowledge and informaton about
the issues at hand. The external environment iniludes all diferent faitors that will have a major
influenie but are oten out of immediate iontrol of the business. These partiular faitors inilude
politial faitors so governmental deiisionsl legal faitors so legislaton and soiial faitors so the
demographii influenies.
Firstly I’m going to be exploring the politial faitors that have an influenie on the
businesses. The two iontrastng organisatons I’m going to look at are the NHS and West Point
Construiton whiih is a loial ionstruiton iompany in the Woriestershire area. The iurrent ioaliton
government has very diferent values and beliefs to any previous governments whiih in turn has led
to a large amount of politial ionfliit. Currently the government has sought to reduie some of the
debts that the iountry has. This will massively have an impait on the NHS beiause it ian then result
in them reieiving less funding to be able to operate. This then in turn would result in them having to
make iutbaiks within their seitor as they are having to spread the money that they are reieiving
over a larger area. In regards to the private seitor a iompany like West Point Construiton iould
faie going into deiline beiause they aren’t reieiving as muih government funding either whiih in
turn iould result in them having to majorly reduie the amount of staf that they employ beiause
they are no longer able to aford to employ them.
Another politial faitor that would afeit a business like West Point would be the
regeneraton of areas of high unemployment. This iould be seen to be a good thing as I would help
for them to be in a positon where they’re generatng more tax iniome so they ian expand by
building on “brownilll sites whiih then in turn will give them more available labour due to the mass
iutbaiks in the publii seitor. It’s not all bad though as it would then further allow for them to gain
development grants in order for their industry to grow. Examples of this growth would be the
building of nuilear power statonsl wind mills/turbines and solar heatng systems. The wind
mills/turbines would be built by UK organisatons and generally not overseas. By building the wind
mills/turbines and solar heatng systems it would enable for the iountry to help reduie the amount
of fossil fuels that we burn annually.
Another politial faitor that would direitly afeit the NHS would be the fait that over reient
years some people who are members of iertain politial partes have been looking into GP’s
ihanging the hours in whiih they work. They have been looking into the idea of them opening for
longer periods of tme in the day and even on weekends. This type of ihange to the NHS would
result in them having to employ a lot more people to help to iope with the demand for the serviie.
If they are in a positon where they are stll getng less funding iould prove to be very difiult as
they wouldn’t have the money to be able to pay these extra members of staf. Although the bonus
to this ihange in the system iould result in the doitors in the hospitals being put under less strain
and iould help reduie the amount of people that use the A & E serviie.
One other politial faitor that would afeit the way that West Point Construiton trades
would be the idea that the Labour party have looked at introduiing a minimum wage of £8 into their
poliiies. This would afeit a business like West Point beiause for the people that are at the botom
of the food ihain in their business would have to be get paid more due to this law. This iould result
in them having to make iuts in iertain areas of their business to be able to iope with this extra
