1.1. In paragraph 1, the author states that bullying is a word synonymous with the type
of conduct expected in school playgrounds. It is not a word that is usually
associated with the workplace. In your own words, discuss 2 plausible factors from
the text that may contribute to the prevalence of workplace bullying. Provide 2 of
your own examples. (10 Marks)
The text suggests the following two reasons workplace bullying might be prevalent.
Firstly, the inherent power imbalances in workplaces can create situations where bullying
goes unchecked. Someone with authority might bully subordinates with less power without
fear of being reported.
For example, a manager could constantly belittle an employee's ideas during meetings, thus
lowering their self-esteem or self-confidence and publicly humiliating them.
Secondly, another contributing factor to workplace bullying, mentioned in the text, is the
lack of awareness and education about harassment and bullying behaviors. Many
employees may not fully understand what constitutes bullying or harassment, leading to a
failure to recognize and address such behavior. Additionally, a lack of clear policies and
procedures for reporting and addressing bullying incidents can exacerbate the problem.
For example, if a colleague constantly makes demeaning comments or spreads rumors about
another co-worker, those involved might not recognize it as bullying if they're unaware of
what constitutes such behavior. (WORD-COUNT: 150 WORDS)
