, Correlation coefficients

3 types of correlation:

Positive correlation
As one variable increases, the other increases.

Negative correlation
As one variable increases the other decreases.

No correlation
Variables have no link at all.

Correlation coefficient
A type of inferential statistics, not descriptive statistic, as a statistical test is
needed in order to calculate it.

A value of +1 represents a perfect positive correlation, closer the coefficient
is to +1 the stronger it is.

A value of -1 a positive negative correlation, the closer the coefficient is to
-1 the stronger it is. An association between two variables, called co-
variables.

Correlation tells us there is a relationship but cannot tell us the cause and
effect.

Correlations allow us to see if two variables have a relationship.

They allow researchers to statistically analyse naturally occurring
phenomenon which could not be set up ethically or practically.

The two variables are investigated without extraneous variables being
controlled therefore, you cannot be certain about why there is a relationship
between two variables.
