An investigation into the
joints of the skeletal
system

Tasks 1,2 and 3

By Amjad G

, A. Definition of a joint

A joint: is where there is an articulation of two or more bones are connected
in the body and allows motion.

B. (A) Diagram of the 3 types of joints

Fixed joint Slightly moveable joint Synovial joint

, B. (B) How each joint is formed
Synovial: They consist of articular cartilage that covers each end
of the opposing skeletal elements, synovial fluid that lubricates and
nourishes the tissues. They are highly moveable and all have a
synovial capsule surrounding the entire joint also a synovial
membrane which secretes synovial fluid.
Fibrous: This is connected by synarthrosis which is then
connected to solid connective tissue which means that the bones are
united by continuous intervening fibrous tissue.
Slightly movable: They allow slight movement. The ends of
bone are covered in articular or hyaline cartilage, it is separated by
pads of white fibrocartilage. Slight movement at articulating surfaces is
made possible because the pads of cartilage compress.
