Pluralism and Theology Revision

Soteriological problem – salvation, who is going to be saved?

Epistemological problem – who has truth?

Salvation is only possible through epistemological truth

Exclusivism (BARTH)

Only Christianity has truth, only Christians will be saved. Protestant and CofE

Key strength – It is biblically and logically coherent. It is biblically coherent because there are
so many parts of the bible support exclusivism. It is logically coherent as there can only be
one truth.

Support: Human sin, soteriologically we need to be saved due to Original Sin. “All have
sinned”. You need Christianity to be saved, you need to accept the incarnation, he is the
atoning sacrifice for sin. “while we were sinners, christ died for us”.
Baptism – “ He who believes and is baptised, is saved”
Church – You are going to hear the gospel.

Key Weakness – Does not support Gods Benevolence, only certain people will be saved.
Some people who have potential to be Christian but have never seen the bible.

Narrow exclusivism – only certain types of Christians can be saved e.g. Jehovahs Witness
Broad exclusivism – if you believe in original sin, the incarnation, are baptised and go to the
church you can be saved.

Inclusivism (RAHNER)

Christianity is still the primary way to salvation but other religions have some truth. Roman
Catholics.

Key Strength – reflects Gods Benevolence

Key Weakness – very little biblical support
However Anonymous Christians, “people have the law written on their hearts”.

Support: Accept that God loves everyone, accept that Jesus died to save everyone, and
accept Natural Theology, which is knowing God through creation.
Anonymous Christians – you can be Christian without knowing it.
Patronising. If salvation is available outside of the church, why bother going?
Christianity is the normative way.
Parable of the Sheep and the Goats supports it.
