Assess the skills required for given practical command and control scenarios and compare these to
own performances

In assessing the skills the required for practical command and control it is necessary to first show the
skills and qualities that are required of a good commander in order to initiate command and control.
These skills and qualities are Decisive, Determination/perseverance, Courage,
Motivational/inspirational, Magnanimous, Humility, Fairness, Confidence, Creativity,
Dedication/devotion, Assertiveness, A good sense of humour, A sense of duty and leading from the
front.

All of these skills and qualities will be necessary if command and control are to be implemented.
Each skill is needed, why each skill is needed is listed below:

 Decisive- a good commander is able to make decisions with conviction and this will give
those under his command confidence to follow their decisions
 Determination/perseverance – a good commander will need to commit themselves to a
cause and follow that through no matter the difficulty and achieve
 Courage- those under a commanders command may have to endure a lot therefore they
expect their leader to be able to lead them through difficult situations and be able to act
courageously
 Motivational/inspirational- in difficult situations it’s easy for those under a commander’s
command to lose their wills to continue, a good commander can motivate them to continue
forward.
 Magnanimous- achievements should be recognised and rewards given as due a good
commander will be fair and give rewards and similar where they are due
 Humility- it is necessary to be humane towards those under your command as a good
commander and be humane and seem human in your choices even in situations that are
very demanding
 Fairness- When interacting with those under your command as a good commander it is
necessary in your decision making to be fair to them; you will need to make a decision that
recognises all sides of all concerned individuals/parties.
 Confident- Usually when the commander is confident then those under their command feel
much more so themselves.
 Creative- A good commander is able to think outside the box and find unconventional
solutions to problems, this will also allow them to lead those under their command in new
directions
 Dedicated/devoted- When a commander devotes themselves to achieving something they
make an excellent example of themselves to others, this will make those under the
commanders command more likely to follow them and their example
 Assertiveness- A good commander will not necessary be aggressive but they should be
assertive to those under their command. This means that a command makes it clear what
they want so there is no longer any misunderstandings and achieve there desired results
 A good sense of humour- it is necessary for a good commander to be able defuse a hostile
situation and be able to lighting the mood of those under their command who may be
feeling rather down. Also being able to joke in a dangerous situation and keep calm inspires
those under your command
