Risk Assessment

Scenario: Bradwell House is a day centre for adults with Down’s Syndrome. There are 12
adults who atend regularly for three days a week. The group are encouraged to take the
lead in planning what actiites they do. At the last meetng, the members decided that they
wanted to put on a Christmas lunch for their parents.

Down Syndrome
Down syndrome is a genetc conditon that typically causes some leiel of learning disability
and characteristc physical features. It is caused by the presence of an extra copy of
chromosome 21 in a baby’s cells. The conditon is not inherited as it is result of a one-of
genetc change in the sperm of egg during concepton. As preiiously mentoned, people
with Down’s syndrome often haie certain physical characteristcs, which could include:
 A fat back of the head
 A big space between the frst and second toe (sandal gap)
 Broad hands with short fngers
 A small nose and fat nasal bridge
 A small mouth with a protruding tongue
 Eyes that slant upwards and outwards
 Below-aierage weight and length at birth
 Reduced muscle tone that results in foppiness (hypotonia)
 Their palm may haie only one crease across it (single transierse palmar crease)

In additon, those afected by this conditon will haie some degree of learning disability and
delayed deielopment. The skills of reaching, sitng, standing, walking and talking could be
afected or delayed but, a person with Down syndrome will acuuire these skills eientually –
it will just take more tme. Furthermore, the learning difculty could also mean that the
person fnds it difcult to understand new informaton, learn new skills and cope
independently.
