Response to Case Study 11

1. RW faces various problems and pitfalls as they try to go global as the transportation

director is unable to decide on the right mode of transport. Also, getting ports that can

safely handle the blades as well as identifying the best route to follow when exporting

their products are some of the significant problems RW faces.

2. Rail transport is the best mode of transportation to use domestically for the company as

trains can comfortably move the turbine blades to the required destination.

Internationally, water transport will be the most appropriate considering the size and

weight of the turbines.

3. The best route to use from Kalamazoo to Bangalore is: the ship to be used will cross the

Pacific Ocean via the Panama Canal then it will arrive in India. The consignment can also

be transported using tracks from Kalamazoo to Cape May located in New Jersey. They

can then use a ship to carry the freight from Cape May to Mangalore Port, India. Road

transport can then be used to move the goods from Mangalore Port to Bangalore.

4. Port authorities operate ports. The authorities will collect customs fees, document and

clear the turbine blades as they enter or leave the ports, as well as conducting an

investigation on the goods. Ports also do the loading and offloading of the goods as they

enter and leave the harbor.
