Task 5: Effective communication Techniques
Effective communication:
It is essential to have effective communication skills as a health care professional in health care
service so the service user can understand the professional without any miscommunication.
Communication is the ability to pass on information to another without any misunderstanding
between the individual and the service user. Effective communication also implies that you can
pay any attention to, fully understand, and act on what others say. Communication between
patients and providers must be open and honest for them to receive the right treatments and
treatment decisions to be made. Providers can make patients feel valued, allay their concerns,
and empower them to reveal relevant information. Effective communication is significant in
healthcare services as its services providers should provide a precise diagnosis of the individual
which will result in them getting a good understanding of their wellbeing and treatment plan.
Communication can be ineffective such as language barriers, as there may be service users that
are unable to speak fluently as English is their second language which could lead to them having
trouble understanding the health professional.
Types of communication:
There are several types of techniques that health care professionals use to communicate with:
 Verbal communication: This term means, the use of phrases to transmit information is
known as verbal communication. This communication utilizes the use of words to
express thoughts and feelings. Good verbal communication is the ability to successfully
clarify and show your ideas through the verbal word, as well as to actively listen to
others. This involves utilizing a variety of methods and styles suitable to the individual
that you are communicating with. It can be used effectively in health service by sharing
information to the service user about the wellbeing and approaching each service user
with the aim of understanding their thoughts and opinions.
 Nonverbal communication: This communication means to deliver messages through
emotions, behaviors, motives and facial expressions etc. without using speech. Body
language can either help or hinder communication with patients. Observing patients'
body language can reveal essential information about how they are feeling. Nonverbal
abilities assist us in communicating emotions and providing emotional support. As a
result, they play a critical role in establishing trust and respect with patients and their
loved ones.
 Alternative communication- Various forms of alternative communication are used for
people with differing needs; for example: the visually impaired, the hearing impaired
and people with learning disabilities.for example there can be service users that are
visually impaired and may receive informarion about prescriptions on letters so an
alternatitve they can use is Braille which is a writing system which enables blind and

, partially sighted people to read and write through touch. Other alternaititve example
consist of British sign language, interpators, finger spelling, translation etc.
 New technologies- Electronic communicators, hearing aids, and videophones are
technological aids designed to assist disabled people who have difficulty sending or
receiving'messages' as part of the communication cycle.for example an individual may
have mobility issues and are enable to make an appointment so a mobile phone can be
used to meet the individuals needs.
Assess the communication techniques used to overcome different challenges faced by valirie ;
Valirie has an hearing impairment so she would have difficulty receiving information from
health professionals. Health professionals can meet her needs by providing the appropriate
communication technique for her; this is important for providers to recognise because she
would need to understand key information. Nonverbal communication techniques are one that
would be appropriate for her. This would be appropriate for her because it is used for
individuals with deferring needs; depending on the circumstances of the hearing impairment,
this technique may include the use of an interpator. Valirie can benefit from the interpator's
assistance in better understanding what is being said to her. An alternative technique, which is
a technological aid that helps those with sensory issues, can also be used. This will result in
improved service. Using these techniques will be beneficial for valirie as she will gain knowledge
and a better understanding of her treatment. However, if she does not receive what she
requires, she may feel discriminated; she may become confused and may not understand much
about her condition; and she may miss essential information from professionals.

Assess the communication techniques used to overcome different challenges faced by
Treymane:
Treymane has a disability, so he may find it difficult to understand complex information from
health professionals, which may lead to him becoming frustrated and impatient. Health
professionals, such as a doctor, can meet his wishes by communicating with him using both
verbal and nonverbal techniques. When communicating with him, use nonverbal techniques
such as hand gestures and eye contact, as focusing on nonverbal communication makes it
easier for Treymane to understand. When communicating with Treymane as well as speaking at
a slower pace, the professionals must recognize his difficulties and use simpler sentences. With
the success of these techniques, Treymane may be calmed down, and he will understand that
he is causing disruption, which may reduce the likelihood of him repeating this. This can lead to
miscommunication and problems with Treymane's treatment; however, the professional can
overcome this by using the appropriate technique for Treymane and determining which
procedure would be most effective for Treymane.
