1. OVERALL - free verse - wants to drift beyond technology and uncover
distance

- 5 unrhymed tercets

- free rhyme and meter ; wants to get lost into his world

2. In February, dig- - introduces us to winter
ging his garden, - the plosives exaggerate at the rough hard work and
planting pota- labour as well as repetitiveness of labour
toes - the allusion to near spring time establishes hopeful tone
and cyclicality of nature to show their relationship is firmly
planted in appreciation of nature

- partial internal rhyme of the gerunds (words with ing)
shows exhaustion which is furthered by the same number
of stresses and syllables

3. 'digging' - the use of active verbs reveal speakers admiration for his
active character.
'planting' - also creates an animated mood especially through rep-
etition of the suffix 'ing' to convey playfulness which con-
'potatoes' trasts to the rough, bleak life in farming; shows how she
romanticises his work and that perhaps it is him that
makes it seem so desirable
- it creates a visual, they're so close she can practically
see him

- juxtaposition 'planting' and 'digging' emphasises the
repetitive aspect of labour and respect for his active char-
acter

- 'potatoes', in lit are a symbol of nourishment, of suste-
nance, of the bonds that link families together. This con-
veys their very platonic bond that despite him being miles
away, she still feels his close proximity so much so she can
see him
- a staple in diet emphasises on his rural life
