Causes of war speech (task one P1)

Wars/ conflicts can be sparked by many factors these can be; politics, nationalism, religion, ideology, land and
resources, historic rivalry, and ethnic differences. Wars are not always countries against other countries; it can
be that one country is supporting and fighting with another country to reduce terror threats. Or there can be a
rebel group going against a countries Government. In this speech I shall be defining war and conflict and then
go on to describe the causes of conflict and war.

War/ conflict can be considered as the response that a society has to reduce the risk of danger towards them
or to reduce another society/ group’s success so that they can achieve their goals. There are different factors
to think about when considering or talking about war these are: unarmed hostility, active military operations,
battles, conflict carried on by force of arms. Unarmed hostility is when there is a war between two or more
countries/ sides however they do not physically attack each other; they do not use weaponry such as missiles
or send troops over to an area to fight one another. An example of unarmed hostility is the cold war between
the United States of America and the Russian Soviet Union (USSR). Active military operations are where a
nation’s military uses physical force to achieve their aims. The military is sent over to another country to then
encounter the opposite sides forces. More than one element of the military to be involved in an active military
operation; the British Army and the Royal Navy can work together on an operation. One example is the war
between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands. A battle is a conflict or a part of war that
is performed by large parts of armed forces to gain or protect. One thing that they could protect is land. An
example is the battle of Passchendaele, this occurred in the first world war when the allied troops advanced on
the German empire lines to gain land. Finally, Conflict carried on by force of arms is where two groups from a
nation or two countries go to war with each other. It can be performed by sea, air, or land. The conflict can be
either unarmed hostility or an active military operation. An example of this is the Northern Ireland conflict;
where Southern Ireland wanted independence from the United Kingdom but Northern Ireland didn’t.

There are many factors that can start wars and conflicts can be set off by more than one of these influences.
Politics is a wide subject and can cover anything from how to run the country to how to dispose of rubbish.
However some subjects in politics that can cause a conflict between nations or societies is border disputes or
disagreements over territory. In order to prevent conflicts such as these political military groups such as NATO
(North Atlantic treaty organisation). Within these groups countries are allied together so that they all help
each other if a nation in the group comes under treat. One example of when this happened is when Germany
invaded Poland in the Second World War and the United Kingdom had to step in as they’re allied with Poland.
Nationalism is where people feel extreme passion for their way of life and think that anyone who lives a
different way is wrong. When this applies to a country it is called ‘nationalism’ and can lead to discrimination
and violence towards groups who do not belong to the dominant culture. Adolf Hitler supported nationalism in
Germany as he believe people who belong to the Jewish faith to be evil. Religion can provide positivity and a
sense of belonging. However there are people who are extremely passionate about their faith that they can
get into arguments with people from other beliefs and religions, this can then lead to war. People can then go
to extreme lengths so that their religion is superior. They can perform terror attacks such as 9/11. Ideology is
when people have a set way of how things should be run, and organised. You can get political ideology and
religious ideologies. Groups can have different ideas on subjects which can then lead to conflict between the
parties. Lad and resources, nations can commonly involve themselves in conflict over resources such as oil,
gas, coal and even water. These resources are immobile and preserving them can cause strain on economies
and politics. As these resources can be the main source of incomes for countries, if they do not sell, they then
it can cause a country to collapse. Also so countries rely on these resources, if a country does not supply them
then that country can also collapse. Sometimes there is rivalry between countries or territories that has lasted
many year. This means there is generally a repeat in conflict between these nations and groups. They never
get fully resolved so the conflict is always there to start up again at any moment. War and conflict can be
caused when a certain ethnic group can be denied something such as a human right, such as education,
because of who they are or where they come from. For example during Adolf Hitler’s reign he denied many
human rights from those who belonged to the Jewish race.
