n this extract, Shakespeare presents Lady Macbeth as a powerful woman in
many different ways.
Firstly, Shakespeare presents Lady Macbeth as a powerful woman through the
use of a demanding tone. The audience sees this when she says, “come you
spirits” and “fill me”. The use of the verb “come”, and “fill” suggest to the
audience that LM has a determined and demanding nature, as here she is
attempting to control supernatural beings, so that she and her husband can
commit regicide, and kill King Duncan. LM As a whole opposes the idea of what
a woman was supposed to be in the Jacobean era; a docile, obedient creature
who raises children and does whatever her husband tells her to do. In the play,
we see that Lady Macbeth is none of these things – it is arguable that in Act
one, she is presented as more powerful and masculine than her brave warrior
of a husband Macbeth as she is willing to kill Duncan to achieve the power she
craves.
Furthermore, Shakespeare also presents Lady Macbeth as a powerful woman
through the use of elaborate metaphors. Lady Macbeth commands the
“murdering ministers” to “make thick my blood” so “that no compunctious
visitings of nature/Shake fell my purpose”. The use of the adjective “thick”
suggest to the audience That Lady Macbeth believes that to do what she wants
to do, she must become more manly, as men in the Jacobean era were seen as
