AQA Environmental Science A-
Level: Life processes in the
biosphere exam review
Explain how the following help a plant adapt to dry conditions:
Leaves falling off in winter, thick cuticles on leaves, rolled leaves,
succulence and the hairs primarily on leaves - Answer>> >
Leaves falling off in winter (decidous trees): When water is
unavaliable, leaf fall means that he plant does not loose water by
transpiration
> Thick cuticles on leaves: The thick waxy cuticle on leaves is
impermeable to water and so water loss is restricted to stomata.
> Rolled leaves: With the stomata on the inside of the roll, a
humid atmosphere is held in the leaf which reduces transpiration.
> Succulence: When water is available, many plants store water
in swollen stems or leaves. The water can then be used when
none is available from the habitat.
> Hairs: These reduce air currents over the stomata and so
reduces transpiration.
Give 4 examples of abiotic factors and 4 examples of biotic
factors. - Answer>> Abiotic: Light, pH, water and mineral
nutrients
Biotic: Food supply, pollination, seed dispersal and disease.
Define succession, primary succession, secondary succession
and plagioclimax. - Answer>> Succession: The process of
change in the species structure of an ecological community over
time.
Primary succession: The establishment of new communities
where none existed before.
