Unit 3 Citizen, Diversity and Public Services Marcus Chadwick
Benefits of a good citizen (P3)
A good citizen can be very beneficial to communities and society as they help out. You can show that
you’re a good citizen by volunteering.
Volunteers in the Public Service
The Volunteering roles in the Public Service are:
Special Police constable
Retained Firefighter
Territorial Army
St John Ambulance
Lifeboat Volunteers
Mountain/Cave Rescue
Some of these you get paid to work like Territorial Army however most of these are through
voluntary and people are not paid to work. These are done in free time or when they are called upon
in response to an emergency. Volunteers are very helpful to the community and save a lot of lives
just by volunteering and don’t just do it for the money. However it’s very hard for people to
volunteer due to having a full time job or a family to provide for.
One of the benefits is that improves society by making a positive difference. They make a positive
difference by improving the environment we live and taking pride in the community by doing
keeping properties well maintained to lead by example and act as role models for younger people. A
massive advantage that being a good citizen has is that it saves the tax payers money as most
volunteering jobs don’t pay the volunteers for participating such as a lifeboat rescue therefore the
tax payers don’t have to spend a penny to improve the community we live in because we have
volunteers. However the disadvantage for not paying volunteers in organisations such as the life
boat rescuers is that they put their lives at risk just to save the lives of normal citizens and they’re
not getting anything out of it however some people believe that the rescuers get a sense of pride for
saving lives. Although volunteering seems like a really good thing another negative is that it could
take away family time because when you’re volunteering in organisations such as a police constable
then most of this work is at night or in your free time therefore family life is in jeopardy due to being
dedicated to the job.
Another benefit is that they protect the environment we live in. This is a benefit because in public
areas you’ll see a lot of litter been thrown on the floor therefore these good citizens either don’t
drop the litter or pick it up to make a cleaner environment. Good citizens have also been known to
engage in recycling groups and cleaning up waste land which can benefit environmental groups to
make a community secure and clean. An advantage for a good citizen that protects the environment
is that is makes a cleaner environment for everyone and a safer environment for children to live and
play as there will be no dangers in public places as good citizens should pick up litter. However this is
a disadvantage as it puts the litter pickers at risk due to glass and needless and because they’re only
volunteers they don’t need to be put in danger and it can negatively affect other citizens to not pick
up litter because of the risks.
Another benefit that being a good citizen has is that it ensures everyone has an equal opportunity
and challenges injustice. This means standing up to other citizens who are racist or homophobic or
even to speak up for citizens who struggle to speak out for example the elderly. A good citizen
encourages equal opportunities in society which inspires others to follow this way. They should be
