Assignment 5

Understanding the current affairs and how they impact the public services

Asylum Seekers and Illegal Immigrants

The issue with immigration is that it occurs all around the world and it easily misunderstood by the
public and public services as people think due to the recent terror attack that they are just coming
into our country to bring terror however they are just running from terror. Asylum Seekers are
people who have to leave their homes to flee from war, religious intolerance, racial hatred and other
life threatening factors. A recent example of this in Syria where a civil war has broken out due to the
government which is led by an evil dictator by the name of Bashar Al Assad and many other groups
such as ISIS fighting the government because they want to become independent. This war has been
ongoing for eight years and has led to 465,000 people being killed in the fighting and over 12 million
fleeing from the country. The impact this has on the UK public services is that we have to send a
warship over to the Mediterranean to pick up and deal with refugees swimming over the
Mediterranean to Italy. This costs a lot of money and time for the public services especially when it’s
not near our boarder. This also puts our country in danger as if our defence warship has gone
elsewhere then who else is going to defend our country and puts our country at risk of being
attacked. It also puts the warship in danger as they are near the Libyan boarder when saving
refugees meaning ISIS could attack the warship at any time and many lives could be loss as a result
of this.

Illegal immigrants are people who go to another country to seek a better life however don’t go
through the legal way of getting a visa to be able to live in that country. The reason why immigrants
illegal go into country’s is because they wouldn’t be able to be given a visa as they have just fled
their own country and have no connection with living in that country. It is estimated that 650,000
people migrated to the UK by the end of June 2016 which is a staggering causing a massive effect on
the public services and citizens. One effect illegal immigration has is that it puts massive pressure on
the public services as if the population increased that’s more people the public services have to deal
meaning response rates will increase due to the sheer amount of people needing treatment. A
statistic shows that in December 2014, 75% of emergency calls were attended within the 8 minute
target by the ambulance service however this target hasn’t been met since then and this is because
of the ongoing increase of population meaning the public services and ambulance service in
particular have more people to treat and not enough staff and resources to treat everyone in the
target time meaning many lives could be lost due to the increase of population through illegal
immigrants. The effects of illegal immigrants on citizens is that an increased crime rate will occur
putting the citizens in danger. For example there has been a rise in knife crime in the UK by 21%
since September 2017 which has a massive effect on citizens as they could get attacked at any time
which causes a loss of many innocent lives. The media can be a positive and negative platform for
the public services and citizen as they can portray a good performance by the public service through
the internet, magazines, newspapers, books and so on. This has a positive effect on the public
services as it shows the public that the services are doing their job to protect the citizens. The
positive side of the media portraying asylum seekers and illegal immigrants is that is gives sympathy
to the them as there was a little boy from Syria who was caught up in a an air strike which his photo
was shown on the news and many articles around the world which educated the citizens that these
are innocent people and to welcome them into the country instead of discrimination towards them.
On the other hand there is an argument that the media portray asylum seekers in a negative way
